I am currently reading One Thousand White Women. Apparently, sometime in the mid to late 19th century, one of the Cherokee chiefs suggested that one thousand white women be sent to marry braves, as in the matrilineal societies their children would be white, so the races would be mixed. Needless to say, the idea was disapproved heartily. However, the novelist took that suggestion and wrote a novel, much of it told through letters, about the women who would have gone and what their lives would have been. It's fascinating.
