Why on Earth are you messaging people who haven't been on here in months or years? The site shows when someone last logged in, so I only look at accounts that have logged in within the last few days. Those are the ones who are likely to be currently searching.
And if they don't say anything in their profile, they probably aren't interested in being contacted. If you limit yourself to people who actually look like they want to be contacted currently, and are a possible match for you, that's usually a much shorter list and worth the time to write a personal message to.
I get around a 50-60% reply rate to my messages, but I don't send many messages.
