What is a house in life style terms?

I've seen it mostly used as a pretentious title for poly households.

I'd have to agree. I'm not sure I've seen it used in a situation where I thought the inhabitants were people I would or did respect. It just sounds kind of silly, like people putting on airs.

Even in the vanilla world, as a kid, I was the "young Master of the house". Whether patriarchal or matriarchal, a house usually stands for a family oriented dwelling. The "House of Kalon", House of Chains" or "House Baronava" stood for the families and people in the associated support network that kept those houses running. In BDSM, the family aspect is held but not all leather type "houses" have a physical dwelling associated with them. Variations on this theme are endless, but in general, it usually means a leather family.

I feel quite different. I feel it is a little old fashioned, heart warming and smacks of charm. Not so long ago, when families were tight and supported each other, if the brother died, perhaps a solider who is a victim of war and died in service to us . . . the wife and kids were invited to live in the family house. Having a strong sense of commitment to your family, a chosen leather family or vanilla family by blood, well, that just doesn't seem pretentious to me.

Different strokes for different folks I guess. But when I meet someone that honors their family and maintains a good relationship with them, they usually turn out to be a rather decent person.
