OK so this is not a BDSM related injury, I just thought people here might have experience with this sort of thing.

I went running and didn't realise until I got home that the seam on my bra had rubbed my nipple to the point of bleeding. Ouch.

I've taken a few days off and while it hasn't got any worse, it hasn't got better either. I am pumping milk and can NOT do without a bra, so it's not getting full rest. I've been using nursing pads slathered with antibacterial cream which eases the pain but am I making it worse by not letting the area breathe? At the moment I'm even wearing a bra in bed, which I try not to do, but it hurts to not have it protected.

Advice? Anyone done this before.

PS. Yes, I know, ask the doctor. But it will take a few days to get an appointment so I would value any advice!

I have been through major nipple issues in my life entirely due to breast feeding. This can happen when your first child needs to nurse every 2 hours for 40 minutes at a stretch !

IMO you most definitely need to let the area breathe. I know, not exactly easy to let the nips hang out, most especially when your breasts are milk filled. Wear your nursing bra and open it up to let the nipples breathe as much as you can. Also, warm compresses should aid healing. A cool compress (or ice, if you can stand it) will relieve pain, and I'd try this before I pumped, since that has to be hell for you. Not sure how your cold nipple will react to pumping, my breasts were so filled with milk, it wasn't an issue when I had to pump.

Hope this helps.

BTW: I'm sure you know, but for others who may not, the La Leche League is still the *IT* place for all breast feeding issues.

Not a wounded nipple expert yet if your anti-B cream is greasy (like neosporin; petroleum based) then the skin is not 'breathing' even if exposed. Not sure why an anti-b cream would ease pain -maybe it's a dual formula. Lidocaine-based (5%) cream might be better for pain (any concern about possible ingestion during feeding?). Hope you find a solution.

Chatte - thanks, honestly I didn't think about LLL. I had a lot of help from consultants in the early days when we had to switch to pumping but it didn't occur to me to consult about this.

ekaienoae - the cream is called savlon, I don't know if you have that in the US but it's not a thick barrier like neosporin, it soaks in. I don't want to use any topical pain relief because I don't want it getting in the milk. I think the savlon just helps because it is cool going on and stops that itchy cracked feeling.

They know their stuff. It doesn't matter how your nips got irritated, they can help.

And that baby I mentioned? He will be 30 in a couple months. Somebody tell me how this happened.

Gauze pads. They allow the area to breathe, but still protect from further abrasion.

I would do repeated applications, day and night, of a high quality Vit. E oil, covered lightly w/surgical gauze, taped on w/easily removable medical tape.

I think you should get some lansinoh lanolin nipple cream - it's the same kind you use for breastfeeding and there is no worry about ingestion. I think Johnson & Johnson make nursing pads that have a 'nipple' shape in the centre to stop any additional chaffing.

Chatte's suggestion of the LLL is very good. They are nipple and bewbie gurus!

Athena, kit is right on the money in her advice about the lanolin cream. You should be able to get it where ever you purchase your pump supplies.

I'm gonna chime in and also point you in the direction of LLL.
No matter what happened they will be able to help you get through it when it comes to any kind of nipple issues while pumping or breastfeeding.
Also, because you're actively pumping it will most likely take a lot longer for them to heal BUT they will heal. Have patience, trust the ladies at LLL, they know thier stuff.
Hope you feel better soon!

I,like Chatte, had some serious damage done by my first child. We used to joke that he was getting more blood than milk.
I used Traumeel salve, which helped tremendously. After nursing or pumping let the milk residue dry on the air, then put on a thin coat of Traumeel and let that soak into the skin.

And yes, LLL should have help.

Rub a little bit of your breastmilk into your nipple areas after you are done pumping.

Warm, wet, tea bags after pumping/nursing should feel soothing.

Buy a couple of nipple shields and wear them under your bra. Nipple shields are those plastic things that fit over your nipple to help a baby nurse. A lot of mothers with preemies use them. They will keep your nipples from rubbing against bra and shirt fabric.

Thanks for the suggestions ladies. I'm still in agony so I'm concerned the skin may have become infected. I have no idea how you'd tell but I've got the doctor on Monday. I'm a bit reluctant to carry on using the lanolin since that would pretty much keep the area moist and sealed.

Sheesh, you try and get fit....

I really hope it's just irritation. Hope the doc can help too.
