They're starting to shut off power to grid sections in Lower Manhattan.

I cannot fathom that there are people still out and about on the cams of Times Square, etc. Just so arrogant and blaise to think that is an okay thing to do. I've been reading/watching stuff all day about this storm. Pretty scary stuff.

Thoughts and prayers are with you all.

I believe many NY'ers have an inflated sense of themselves in regards to seeing themselves as tough, and being able to handle more than others might. Having been born, and partially raised in NYC, I still see that coming out in myself, from time to time. How much of it is actually true or not, I am not sure. Granted, life in NY, especially in the city, can be challenging, often requires a thick skin, and a willingness to not back down when confronted, if one wants to get anywhere. You know, the old never show fear, and never say die sort of thing. For some, I'm sure it's a protective outer facade, and for others, well, maybe they were just born as mean as junkyard dogs. I think for the majority, it might be more a case of indoctrinated/adopted pride that turns into a portion of our sense of identity, as we all hear from one another (from birth on) how tough we NY'ers are, and we end up taking a near nationalistic pride in waving that flag.

That being said, having been born and bred in NYC, as tough as I like to imagine myself at times, I have always known Nature is waaaay bigger and badder than me. I will neither taunt nor disrespect her, as I have no delusions about being invulnerable. It never ceases to amaze me how some people, all over the world, have what seems like no sense at all. Like in the case of hurricanes, tornados, etc., while most sensible folks are preparing for, evacuating potentially dangerous situations and getting as far away as possible, the delusional stand right at the shoreline, or as close as possible to the tornado, and watch it in wonder.

What is it that makes some do this? I have no clue. Maybe they've gone through, and survived unscathed, multiple weather situations that were overly hyped up before hand, so they figure warnings are exaggerated, and need not be heeded. I dunno.

I got a niece in the DC area and so far, Mom is not calling her. Being the anxious aunt, I am concerned about her.

I have dealt with snow storms and a couple of hurricanes. My heart goes out to those in this unholy mess.

I have winds that sound like my windows will blow off any moment now and I have rain coming in through the windowsill.

Called the super and all he could do was put plastic on the window sills and placed towels rolled up.

I feel fucked and not in a good way.

I hate this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

red, I have been thinking about you near the river in NNJ!!
You are in one of the worse area's.
Do you still have electricity?

I am watching the coverage on tv.
I hope you are in the interior of your dwelling, consider sleeping in the bathroom/bathtub.

Be safe and keep us posted!

Thanks for thinking of me. :). So far, lucky to have electricity. My parents who live 60 miles south in NJ lost their power. Most of my town has lost power, so knock on wood.

They lost a huge transformer so my local hospital is surrounded by water on the river and now they are without power. So bad.

I still have huge winds and rain, and I have some water dripping down the interior walls, but so far, I am doing better than most.

Thanks for the update!
Yay! for not losing power!
Hopefully you have seen the worst of it.
Hang in there!

MAINEiacMISTRESS -> RE: Hurricane Sandy/Frankenstorm (10/29/2012 8:36:46 PM)

It was nice earlier when it was just raining. I was out in it all day moving brush and it was quite pleasant. The wind just started here in earnest in Central Maine around 11 PM. I'm not concerned about losing power, the woodstove is cranking away and we have water stockpiled in case the power goes out. I AM however worried about the four beautiful giant pine trees that surround our driveway. One of these days we're going to wake up in the morning to find a big ol' limb has flattened one of our cars.

We have a high wind warning this morning, a garbage bin walked during the night.
Down in WV my pet is driving up to Baltimore for an appointment at JohnHopkins... Im more than a little concerned, But I just spoke to him and he seems to be ok.

eerr...I hope he called JH before he left. Absolutely everything in Bmore was closed today...everything. JH even called me today to cancel my appointment for tomorrow and they are also closed on Wednesday according to my doc.

MalcolmNathaniel -> RE: Hurricane Sandy/Frankenstorm (10/29/2012 11:24:04 PM)

My house caught on fire. How well did you do?

Marc2b -> RE: Hurricane Sandy/Frankenstorm (10/30/2012 6:18:40 AM)

Things weren't as bad in my neck of the woods as they said they were going to be. Winds weren't too high (no downed trees reported) and no power outage. It is raining like hell right now, though, and flooding remains a concern. Areas not to far south of me got it worse.

Good thoughts and best wishes to everyone else who got the punch... I hope you're all weathering it.

Yeah he did, he called before leaving:) He made it there and back and had his procedure(pre surgery CT scan)> Took longer than normal travelling but he made it.

Here in TO we had one death from a falling sign, 50,000+ without power, and a fire, lots of trees down but things are much better than anticipated. We lost power for about twenty seconds, so Im happy for that, but my thoughts are with those who are NOT having that luck.

Baroana -> RE: Hurricane Sandy/Frankenstorm (10/30/2012 8:58:32 AM)

Still alive. Home has lost power though. Been at work yesterday and today.

cloudboy -> RE: Hurricane Sandy/Frankenstorm (10/30/2012 9:22:17 AM)

You should be busy if you are in the insurance business.

BALTO Inner Harbor has not flooded or experienced a damaging tidal surge (yet.) Water is receding in the inner harbor, which I see as a good sign.

Peak of the storm seemed to go from 3:00 PM MON to about 4:00 AM TUE with high winds and steady rain (but not a severe downpour.) Now the winds and rain are negligible.

The ground is completely soaked and saturated.

OCEAN CITY MD got pounded and its fishing pier was destroyed. Flooding was really bad too.

MalcolmNathaniel -> RE: Hurricane Sandy/Frankenstorm (10/30/2012 9:50:08 AM)

Not a joke.

No one was hurt but it's a total write off. I'm away in Virginia at the moment. I can't even go look for myself for a couple of days because there are 400 miles of storm swept roads between here and there.

Exciting!

kalikshama -> RE: Hurricane Sandy/Frankenstorm (10/30/2012 10:07:37 AM)

I lost power for about 5 hours yesterday, during which time I realized I did not have enough ice on hand for an extended outage. However, I had been counting on having access to someone with electricity between this place, my new place one town over, and my mother and brother, 20 and 25 miles away. My new place never lost power; my mother was still out this AM but is back on now as her physical answering machine is picking up rather than going straight to the Comcast VM. My brother is not answering his phone.

I got internet back on around 11 AM this morning. When I called for an ETA earlier, they said that usually the techs do not put one in and when they do they are wrong.

I think the electric companies in my state were much better prepared for this storm than they were for Irene last year. I believe they had to pay some fines for their lack of preparedness. Will check on that when I get back. Off to the apple farm.

I'm saddened to hear of your loss, Malcolm. Heartfelt wishes for your continued safety.

littlewonder -> RE: Hurricane Sandy/Frankenstorm (10/30/2012 11:22:39 AM)

Oh wow, Malcolm. At least you are safe.

Here in Baltimore, I only had my power go off once yesterday for 3 hours but that was it. My cable went out last night and I just went to bed. Woke up to find it all connected again. No flooding that I'm aware of. I haven't been out yet but I will be soon so we'll see what it's like out there.

My daughter however, is still without power today. I tried to talk her into coming over here so she can shower, have a place to put their food, have heat, etc....but she's being stubborn. Maybe by tonight when it gets really cold, she'll stop being so stubborn.

I've lost a house to a disaster myself. No injuries. That's the important thing. The rest is just.........stuff.

Call your insurance agent and go over what they offer you with a fine toothed comb to make sure you get what you should. Remember, their job is not to PAY you for a disaster. Their job is NOT to pay you.

Call your mortgage company to tell them what has happened. A lot of the time, they'll flag your mortgage so you don't have to make a payment until the Ins comes in so you can pay it off. If they do, GET IT IN WRITIMG.
After Andrew, I was assured that was the case. A couple of months later, nasty notes started showing up in the mailbox. I called them and was told that "As you have made no attempt to contact us.. I stopped them and said "If Ive not contacted you, how did you get my new address?".....silence..........
Don't let the mortgage company screw with with you. You didn't sign up for that and don't deserve it.
I took losing a house as an opportunity to get out of a soso neighborhood. Don't automatically rebuild on the same spot. This might be an opportunity.

If you need more info and want to know what I did wrong so you can avoid my mistakes, my box is open on the other side.

needlesandpins -> RE: Hurricane Sandy/Frankenstorm (10/30/2012 11:46:09 AM)

again i just want to wish everyone well, and safety.

Malcolm, i'm sorry to hear you lost your house. i hope your insurance company are good with you.
