Insomnia is a longtime nemesis of mine, though meds have largely kept it under control in recent years. The past weeks, however, it's been back with a vengeance, even when I take my meds.

Anyone else battle this demon? If so, what works for you?

I've been an insomniac for years upon years now. I've tried everything under the sun to no avail. Benadryl used to work for me but then I became immune to it. I've tried meds from the doctors. None worked at all. I've tried sleepytime tea, alcohol, otc products,etc...

The only drug that ever worked for me was Ambien but I would black out and walk and talk in my sleep, doing weird things. I became addicted to them. After I fell down a flight of steps and didn't remember it until the ex Dom told me the next day, I decided that was enough. But boy was that one great drug! [8D]

I'm taking dicyclomine, a stomach spasm med, for stomach problems now, not for sleep but funnily enough, it knocks me out cold. Bad thing...I have to take it all day long so I'm falling asleep at inopportune times. But the last few nights I've taken it, it hasn't worked at night. I have a feeling I'm becoming immune to that now too.

Hopefully for you though, speak to your doc if it gets to the point of not being able to function. If you haven't tried otcs, try those. I used to have a little bit of help from Sleepytime tea or chamomile tea. Try those and see if they work.

Oh, some other things: exercise before bed, turn off all noises and block out all light unless you're one of these people who needs white noise to fall asleep. There are plenty of apps out there for that.

Dim your computer in the evening. I use this program. It really works for me and has also helped me to not have as much eye strain and headaches. I love this program.

If I think of anything else that I have tried over the years, I'll make sure to respond again.

If you ever find a miracle drug though, please let me know!

Although this will offer some homeopathic remedies for insomnia, it does not cover all of them.

Inversions in yoga are all hailed as 'remedies' to insomnia. They clear your mind and your body of toxins and tension. The best and easiest one to do is Viparita Karani.

Become a tradesman, move 20 tonnes by hand

Yes! And you might also try a supported side-twist right there in bed (sorry, I was unable to find a picture but I will explain how).

Stack two or three pillows or folded cotton blankets the long way to support your torso. Lie on your right side with your legs in an 'M' or 'mermaid' position. Raise your torso with your arms and twist to the right until your arms straddle each side of the pillow. Make your back long and straight, then gently lower your arms/torso onto the pillow stack, turning your face to the left (same as your knees). For more comfort, stretch your right arm down your side while the left drops below the pillows and onto the mattress. Put a heating pad on your back/neck and hold this position for 10-15 minutes, then switch to the other side (left) until you feel drowsy.

Supported twists are very calming to the central nervous system. Starting on the right governs brain activity and lets you process your thoughts. Switching to the left tells your brain it can rest now. This twist is good for relieving low-back pain and gives you a nice, even stretch in the neck without strain. The heating pad is optional but it just feels good and signals my muscles to fully relax.

If you are in a state that allows medical cannabis, there are many indica strains available that can be just the boost you need to deeply sleep. They can be ingested in an edible (long-acting; ~6-7 hours. Good if you can't stay asleep through the night). If you just need help getting to sleep you can use your medicine in a vaporizer (short-acting...1-2 hours) so you don't have to smoke.

Sweet dreams!

Oooh yeah! My restorative yoga teacher is a certified hypnotherapist also, put me in a side twist with her voice and I'm OUT within 2 minutes.

lifelong sufferer like little wonder. Valium and Ambien., but I need breaks or I get a tolerance. I hate it. Sorry dc.

I take melatonin about an hour before bed and it works well.

I have always struggled with insomnia. The one thing that has made a huge difference for me is cutting out all caffeine intake prior to 3pm daily, no exceptions. I've been doing this for months and it has made a huge difference. I still have insomnia, but it's easier for me to fall back to sleep. I used to think caffeine didn't make any difference until I cut it out, I actually get tired around 11pm.

fucktoyprincess -> RE: Insomnia Remedies (11/4/2012 4:46:09 PM)

dc, I suffered from insomnia a long time ago. The roots were psychological - and when the true source of the worry went away, so did the insomnia. I only mention this because I think it is important to understand what the roots of your particular insomnia are. Is it psychological or physical, for starters. If it is psychological, is there any way to manage it. If it is physical, then one of the suggestions above might help (for example, if you can tie it to caffeine intake, then as one responder suggested, no caffeine after 3 pm). I only say this because while there may be a myriad of ways that work for others, trying to isolate why the insomnia is occurring is probably a good investment to make to make your solution more targeted. Not all insomnia is the same, so to speak.

OsideGirl -> RE: Insomnia Remedies (11/4/2012 4:50:35 PM)

Changing my vitamins to a whole food liquid vitamin is what worked for me.

DaddySatyr -> RE: Insomnia Remedies (11/4/2012 4:53:58 PM)

I suffer from PTSD which manifests mostly (thank God) in horrible nightmares that cause insomnia.

I went for therapy. They pumped meds into me. The only thing I've found that comes close to working is: a good, tiring round of sex (no, I'm not being a dog) followed by self hypnosis.

Even people who cannot be hypnotized by others can self-hypnotize. It's the only thing that works for me, really.

Peace and comfort,

Michael

I've always had some degree of insomnia even when I was a kid. I had ambien when the combination of my migraines and lack of sleep was too much for me, but taking it would make me forget the last 3 hours or so of my night so it was pretty nasty. Now, amitriptyline helps me a ton although I started taking it for migraine prevention. It stopped working for that at some point, but I've still been taking it for what it does to my ability to sleep.

Finally getting my adrenal fatigue fixed. Turned out my adrenals were 90% shut down & my thyroid not much better. Functional medicine doc was the first not to tell me I need prozac, if I ate better or exercised more or did yoga before bed I wouldn't have these issues. He actually looked at what FOR ME wasn't normal, not what some chart said was "acceptably out of whack"

I went gluten free almost 3 years ago & have had ONE full blown migraine due to strobe lights in that time. Food for thought
