MissAsylum -> Dog ALWAYS wants to go out in sucky weather (10/30/2012 1:56:47 AM)

i think i'm doing something wrong, or not getting something- so I need help.

My dog has a set schedule for when she goes out during the day: 8am, 3pm, and 7:30pm. She knows when she goes out, despite myself or my fiancé being home.

However, when the weather is terrible- take the current hurricane for instance, she seemingly has to go out every hour, on the hour.

I hear most dogs don't WANT to go out, so i'm perplexed.

I haven't been to sleep as a result because I don't want her to have an accident.

What's going on here?

It's more likely a stress thing. One of my dogs wants to go out all the time when the weather is being loud, despite me needing to use a crowbar to get him off his butt when the sun is shining.

Dogs are a lot more sensitive to changes in atmospheric pressure and noise, so it's likely she's just reacting in the only way she can.

Every dog I've had wants to get out when
theres a big storm, it's the loud noises and all
wind, the smells are going crazy and it's all
exciting.
I'm sure a lot of dogs get scared but the ones
I've had just want to get out and run around in
it.

And I can't blame them, I like going out in
storms as well, maybe my craziness rubbed
of on the dogs. [:D]

Umm with the hurricane though... My advice is
tie it up in the garage or something... It's not
safe out there.

My pleasure, MissA [:D]

She may be picking up on your stress too, but when my girly fuzzbutt figures I'm stressed, she just lies right next to me and gives me her version of a cuddle. Dogs are awesome!

Every dog I've ever had wanted to go out.

Notice the period.

It doesn't matter whether it's a giant storm or there's a car coming down the street or there's a squirrel somewhere within 100 miles. They always wanted to go out.

Of course they wanted to come back in about 3 seconds later. Then they wanted to go out again.

And then back in. Rinse and repeat.

I'm thinking there might be at least three possible reasons.

Storms tend to disturb dogs more than cats. The more frightened they are, they more they may feel like they need to pee. I know that's how it works for me!

Also, it is not uncommon for animals, when sensing storm danger, to feel the need to leave home in search of a safer place, which they can't do if they're housed or fenced in.

Ever notice, or hear about, how before earthquakes and tsunamis, beau coup animals suddenly go missing. They know something evil this way comes, and they're looking for safer ground. Their instinct tells them to get the hell outta Dodge!

Then, the more sensitive the animal's nervous system, the less it feels it can endure stress or threat, real or perceived, and it may just become frantic/frightened. Back in my old racetrack days, which were full of finely bred, highly sensitive thoroughbreads, we'd know a storm was due to hit 6-12 hours in advance. The incoming barometric changes drove those horses crazy, they were like lightening rods for it, and they'd be unmanageable, running around their stalls, and bouncing off the walls until the storm broke. Gawd, they were dangerous during those times!

Great answer, why didn't anyone think of that before? Just Dom the heck out of that dog and tell it NOT to pee on anything under any circumstances! Considering the OP's main concern is bathroom related accidents by the dog, I'm sure your solution of showing the dog who is boss will take care of things, great addition!

Mine wanted to put his head behind the toilet (our bathroom was on an interior wall.) I would try to get him to lie in bed with me so I could reassure him by petting him, but when he insisted on hiding in the bathroom, I didn't feel the need to exert dominance.

My dog is relatively calm today, as in she slept all day.

She got rattled a little bit when there was a huge gust of wind earlier, and she repeated the in-and-out behavior.

i'm just glad that...some...people here (lol) actually shed some light on what was going on with my dog.

When you let her out during storms, what does she do? Watch her at least three or four times to see if she's peeing or pooping when she asks to go out during inclement weather. If she isn't, then ignore her requests to go outside during storms in the future (unless she's really insistent, which might indication an actual need to relieve herself). Instead, give her a bone or toy or distract her some other way. Be consistent with the distractions during storms and teach her she doesn't get to go outside at those times unless it's an emergency. If she seems nervous because of the storms and she wants to go outside to see what's going on to make herself feel more secure, the distractions will help with that also.

LaTigresse -> RE: Dog ALWAYS wants to go out in sucky weather (10/31/2012 9:36:28 AM)

It might also be that she needed to relieve herself but the weather had her too freaked out.

Inside: "I need to go out and pee/poop."

Outside: "Jesus fucking christ you expect me to relax enough to let go of a shit! Let me back in!!!"

My dogs tend to hate me forcing them outside during bad weather. Especially the one that's part coyote.

Their preferred spot when the weather gets wild and crazy......Either my bed, or next to me if I am sitting or laying down. The sofa can get very crowded.

kalikshama -> RE: Dog ALWAYS wants to go out in sucky weather (10/31/2012 9:38:38 AM)

Ya, there have been several conditions under which my bladder would not release...

LaTigresse -> RE: Dog ALWAYS wants to go out in sucky weather (10/31/2012 9:44:00 AM)

Yep. And my dogs, when they get stressed about stuff, will hold it in.

If I take Nala on a road trip with me, she loves it but she does get kinda weird about both intake, and out. She has to be coaxed to drink water and won't poop all day, until she gets home.
