I am with you, Xanthrin, although I suspect this thread will likely be moved.

My very best love and energies goes out to all of you, however much or little your lives, homes, friends and family were impacted, that you will recover, rebuild and rally quickly.

Thank you.
It's rough and I've seen things I would never have imagined in my life.

So, at least a 110 dead, hope everyone takes a moment of silence......and hope everyone gets their vote on.

It's a day in the life of America, and we're goin with what's on the cart.

Toy things are still pretty smooth, even though they are a giant pile of crap! Neighbors are working together, supplys are at least getting to the edge of most affected neighborhoods & nothing is frozen...yet. At this point in katrina ground forces had barely moved & everyone was blaming everyone else for why that was.
The power/ gas issue makes sense if you understand sub stations & grid hubs are on the ground & under water which makes power to overhead lines difficult if not terribly dangerous. Turning power on when a line is in the water would electricute everything for at least a block, depending on the size wire even farther.
Phones & cable again lines are buried & carry electrical current. Cell towers its entirely possible panels were blown off limiting power. Vendors that own the towers are going to take care of their customers first meaning discount & secondary carriers customers can't get a signal
Have been through 4 hurricaines & 3 tornados...there is a reason live where I do. 100 year snow storms are the greatest danger we face.

I hate admitting that a book of fiction has been my greatest disaster resource, but alas babylon has a very good take on imagined to be useful verses actually needed in disaster. Oil burning hurricaine lamps, wood burning stoves, extra blankets, high protein non perishables like jerkey will be handy. Fillng the tubs & buckets with water would have given safe drinking water for longer than normally necessary.baby wipes are good for bathing & sanitizing if water is still bad.
This happening in NY, NJ & manhatten proves like 9/11 that the publc transit plan that normally is a godsend is useless in a real emergency. Most that used to have cars, now have aquariums increasing the aggrivation of supplies being miles away.flat bottom boats are almost unheard of there & that (with a fire arm)is about the only safe way to move around.
I'm experienced with this kind of stuff but I do not in any way envy those dealing with sandy, because the infastructure just doesn't support the normal plans for disaster response.
