sugar, i've studied latin american history in depth, i'm well aware of that. however, religion is not the main predictor of how people vote, though it is influential. posting a map of latin america isn't going to change the fact that we are talking about american citizens with latino heritage who practice a range of different religions, have different life experiences, who vote in the united states.

also, your little map needs to include islands in the caribbean...i'm not sure what site you lifted it from.

How about posting some kind of useful information and leave the snark and attacks unspoken. You don't have to be a jackass and insult blocks of people. It's flippant words like "retard and gay" as descriptors that make you seem like a petulant child and cause people who may have agreed with the core of what you said tune out.

As to my thoughts on the election I believe it was a hard trail for both of them. I think the next four years is going to an exercise in compromise. If they fail then it will be gridlock for as long as the American people will stand for it.

The islands in the Caribbean are not generally Mestizo. They are usually of the Creole (French origin) or the "Zambo" culture, as is Brazil, due to the huge numbers of slaves carried there from Africa by the Europeans.

And many of the American" "Latinos" (who are mestizos) were there in the United States hundreds of years before the United States was a nation.

Taking this constituency for granted will be a serious error.

cuba, the dominican republic, and puerto rico are notably missing. depending on what your definition of mestizo is, the term is often used to denote persons of mixed race heritage period, not just some races. yes, that includes blacks. and duh, lots of parts of the united states were formerly parts of mexico. american history 101.

my original point stands -- latinos in america are diverse and don't just vote based on religion and immigration policy, as many media sources like to report. it's much more complex than that. so if you want to school someone about that, come harder.

Since mestizo is a Spanish word from the Spanish feudal casta system, racial and class based in original nature, and now describing the several cultures that evolved as a result, I use that definition (Spanish-Indian in origin, and fusing the two to create the current cultural "normalcy.") And Cuba, the Dominican Republic or Puerto Rico do not meet the current cultural definition (nor does Jamaica, Haiti, Martinique, etc, either.)

And certainly people are diverse, the fact I am posting here on this board (in English too) differentiates me from many of the rurales in my home province. But for every one who differs, there are ten who do not.

And culture goes far deeper then just religion or immigration.

i'm aware of that as well, you're still missing my point. regardless of how you define mestizo or any wikipedia article you point me towards, people (not just latinos) vote for issues and candidates. culture and religion, of course, play a part. but that is true for everyone, regardless of race.

if your original post is true, based on the "social conservatism" of american latinos, they should have mostly voted republican. exit polls show that over seventy-one percent voted democratic in this election. how do you explain that?

if i felt like voting for obama was the "lesser of the two evils", i'd either stay home or cast my vote for a third party.

i don't think latino folks vote on one issue, i think it goes deeper than that. so, i disagree with your reasoning and i'm done going in circles about it because i've proven my point. have a good night.

I went four for four tonight! Got the state rep, state senator, US Senator and US President that I wanted into office. That's not easy to do if you think about. Speaking on the race itself, I'm just glad its over. To many people were just starting to crack under the pressure, arrigvation, axiety and even stress of all the ads, robo calls, and internet material. Just to have things stablize and relax will do much for the nation. Mr Romney gave a very good concession speech. It was classy, good natured and sincere. Yes, he must of disliked the whole thing, but he bows out as a gentleman, not as the villian.

There have been many individuals on these boards and in the nation itself, that tried so hard to cast President Obama as a one term president. To that, you FAILED! Tonight, Americans decided they rather have a man that has been honest, patient, thoughtful, and sincere, regardless of the circumstances. Over another man that sided with those that were hateful and dishonest towards their fellow Americans. And that even with all the voter suppression in so many states, not to mention all the other methods used to lie and cheat, your canidate lost! Perhaps you should hold your canidates for office to a higher standard than that of those you dont want in office. You would have had a strong canidate against President Obama.

Had to get that last part off my chest. Four years of all the petty crap from the GOP, to finally see the President vindicated by the American public as their choice to represent them within and beyond our nation. Maybe the Republicans could finally stop behaving like little children, grow the F**k up and get stuff accomplished. We still have a bad economy, high unemployment, and about five thousand other serious problems to deal with. How about we just let the past be what it is, forgive and move onward. Rebuild the nation from its healthcare to its education. Rebuild and restore its infrastructor while leveling out the budget. We tackle that debt like mature adults should while we learn to coexist once more. All that anger and rage on all sides, really isnt healthy for the nation's long term future. We've made many mistakes, but I still feel this is one of the greatest nations mankind has ever known.

I wasn't a bit surprised to see Obama take it. Maybe next time the right will try to come up with someone I can actually vote for.

I'm glad Stabenow made it back into the senate. I was a little concerned about that one.

all but one prop was killed. Maybe next time they should try spreading a little less bs and they might actually get some votes.

All in all not bad at all.

I was a bit surprised to see yet another email with a plea for money from the left. I was hoping maybe that would stop for a bit after the election but obviously I was wrong.
