Earlier tonight, I came across an interesting observation by historian Kendrick Clements.

Anyone care to guess whom he's describing?

"The effect of [his] exhortations on his audiences was magical. By assuming that they would join him in noble self-sacrifice without spelling out what they would be asked to give up, he allowed them to feel idealistic at no cost. Because the desire to feel noble without having to act nobly is a strong human emotion, [his] audiences went home feeling delighted with themselves and with him. A few hours later they might have trouble remembering exactly what he had said, but the glow lingered."

I'm guessing Wilson (he wrote a major bio of Wilson).

Right as ever, DK! It is Wilson. Though it occurred to me this evening that it may also apply to Obama in 2008.
