My neck aches. I mean really sore, like when you want to cry but try to keep it in. It feels strained like I am choking, but the inside does not hurt like when I have a sore throat. It doesn't feel viral or bacterial. It's been hurting me on and off for a while, only lately it is more and more. I watched it swell on the sides and all the way down to where my thyroid rests near the collarbone. I think it may be thyroid, but I have had the tests and they said no. Of course I had those tests way back when the soreness was only once and a while. Ok.. I know you are all going to chime in, go see a doctor. But with a 600 deductible still to pay, I don't think I will be making a trip to the doctor until after I recover from paying my house taxes. I might opt out of my taxes until they are late though if thyroids are something I need to watch out for. Any clue about what signs that happen if it is just a thyroid flareup?

I don't think it's thyroidal. Sounds like all your lymph nodes are swollen. Which could indicate anything from mononucleosis, Epstein-Barr, sinus infection to lymphoma.

Look, a year ago in September a friend of Mine was having the same symptoms, lump on the neck spreading down to collarbone, etc. He went to the doc's and got the same response. He was in same financial situation and frustrated with the doc's lack of concern he didn't want to go back and waste more money. The swelling got worse. I finally yelled at him to go to another doc and INSIST they investigate. He did. They speculated, dragged their feet, and FINALLY ordered a biopsy... It was lymphoma. God damn frigging doctors. They are so hesitant to run full range of tests to troubleshoot. He had lost four or five months before they FINALLY did the biopsy (January or February). Cancer can do a hell of a lot on that time!!! They finally did MRI's and found more lumps inside his abdomen, proof that it had spread. They did surgery and removed those (I found out later he nearly died from complications during the surgery), got him on a treatment regimen. Thankfully he is still with us and the tumors have shrunk (he's VERY lucky, his particular type of lymphoma is "slow growing" and responded well to treatment). Anyway, get your ass to ANOTHER doc, walk in and DEMAND they run tests (yes, you can. this is not the time to be passive with them). At least have them rule out lymphoma!

I hate the thought of paying out 600 bucks before I get any action. That's 1/4 of my house taxes and a big loss for me, particularly now that I have much less money than I used to, due to watching over my mom. I have tonsils but they are mostly withered stumps now after years of issues with them. I know that feeling well enough to know that this is not a sore throat. A couple of years ago when I had them run tests I was sure it was thyroid, but according to results it was not. It has only been recently that I discovered there is more than one way a thyroid can go wrong and one test does cover the other ways, it only covers the most likely. I have had similar glandular flareups in the past that just run through gland by gland until it runs its course, but this is the first time I ever felt a concern about what is going on. sigh. I guess I will give it a week to see if things change and if they don't bite that bullet and pay the fine.

Find a functional medicine doctor, they can run tests for all the other things as well

When I read things like this it makes me realise that we lucky to have a NHS ...health care for all ....free. I hope all goes well for you

It doesn't sound like a thyroid issue at all though, and problems with your thyroid aren't typically going to cause pain in the throat. Your thyroid controls so many bodily functions, if the problem was your thyroid, you would likely be experiencing problems that appear to be hyper or hypo thryoid. Doctors are a pain in the ass these days. Insurance companies are forcing them to do as little testing as possible and it causes them to miss so much. As others suggested, choose a new doctor and really assert that this has been going on for a while and you want it resolved.

I have Hashimotos, which is one type of low thyroid. My thyroid had been slightly low at times, but then one spring after an infection, I noticed that my throat seemed "full" all the time, I had some difficulty swallowing, and I could feel a lump where my thyroid was. I went to the doc and asked her to run the FULL thyroid panel, including antibodies (because sometimes the quick test misses things). Turns out that I was developing a goiter (visions of that Seinfeld episode danced in my head - yikes!). I was put on synthroid and problem solved. I also had an easier time losing weight once the low thyroid was treated. I know paying for doctor visits suck...but these same things can be signs of other issues, such as thyroid cancer, so I would get it checked out. If you are more tired than usual, your hair or skin seems drier, you seem to be putting on weight or having trouble losing it, you are sleeping more....it may very well be low thyroid.

Good info if you're a company that sells natural thyroid and wants to expand its sales. Sorry Level, synthetic thyroid works fine for the vast majority of people.
