Hi all,

So, I am really interested in rope, and all of the things that can be done to me with it. However, I am also interested in not permanently injuring myself in the search for pleasure. So, I am asking for advice, guidlines, sources of information, to help educate me on the possible dangers involved.

I'm sure that this topic has come up in the past, and I have read over some of the older posts, but I wanted to bring this topic back.

Are there things that I should not let someone do (or not do for prolonged times)? I know that there are positions that are more dangerous to keep someone in for long durations, but I don't know what those positions are. I am a sub, so I won't be the one doing the tying, but I would like to know whether someone is doing something (I would hope unknowingly) that might have long term effects on my health.

I am in Toronto, so if anyone has info on sessions/classes in the area, I would love to find out more about them. Do the rope sessions let people like me in (subs that aren't so much interested in how to tie someone up, but want to know how to stay safe when someone else is tying you up)? How do I find out about these?

I've had people mention things like nerve points and preasure points to me. Are there any early symptoms that I (or any sub being bound) should be aware of? How can you tell if a binding is not good for you?

Thanks
lts

i love bondage, since it can add lots of fun to a scene. when i was starting out, a friend passed along a great article that covers a lot of the basic questions to me. you can find it here. a lot of the basics you ask about are covered there.

as far as the toronto bondage scene, i'm sure there are some canadians that can cover this better than i, but in a quick google search i found the toronto tng blog and i bet they could point you in the direction of a local ropes class. hope this helps!

These are all VERY legitimate questions. I like to see a sub looking out for her/his own safety while still being curious.

Thanks for the links. The first one was great, although for some reason my computer isn't letting me load all of the pages. I got about half way through. It was exactly the kind of info I was looking for. I'll be working on getting the rest of it.

As for the Toronto events, I would love some feedback from Torontonians. I've had one person message me warning me away from some of them, and directing me to others. But since he doesn't seem to post to the forums, I would like to get other opinions.

Again, thanks.

Esinem in my opinion is one of the best Shibari Masters in the world. His study on nerve injuries related to box ties and suspension is well worth a look.

I belive ol B has CDs now, that will help you in the deal, he is pretty concerned about safety.

Suspension is the most dangerous. Anyone wanting to do that should demonstrate a lot of knowledge.

For more usual stuff, nothing around the neck. If something hurts, change the tie. If parts are going numb, undo the tie. The top should pay attention to color and temperature of the tied parts. The Man's untied me when I'm saying I'm fine and it isn't until some minutes later that I get pins and needles as circulation returns. If you're off in la la land you won't be able to notice or tell him there's a problem.

Jay Wiseman's Erotic Bondage is the safety bible. A great place to begin.

Thought I would comment.

I haven't been to Toronto but they do have a significant amount of rope and a lovely event called Morpheous Bondage Extravaganza. You can google it. It is Shibari or Japanese inspired rope work.

It is fairly low risk to talk and share about rope. There may be a "Rope Bite" group in the area. The context would be doing rope to learn not to play.

You can also look at videos such as the ones on TwistedMonk.com and fusion style rope on youtube from the Two Naughty Boys. A Canadian, Douglas Kent did two books on Shibari.

As for risk, yep rope can be risky if you haven't a clue, less risk as you know your stuff. Do small baby steps, figure out what you like, don't like and advance your play.

If you want suspension, get references and/or watch them play if you can.

Esinem is one of the best. He is keen on safety.

I have his DVDs, not sure how much they overlap with the 2 videos he has on the net:

The neck is the area to be concerned with.
Shibari is the most sensual form without being brutal. It's an artform.
