Tech suppport?

My speakers just stopped working. I checked the hookups, etc, nothing. Well, I just bought new speakers, they're not working either. I know I have them hooked up right too. Does any of the technical geniuses in here have any idea what might could be wrong? Thanks.

What are the speakers hooked to? If both the old and new pair aren't working, they aren't getting anything to amplify. Check the connections again.

If you're sure the speakers are wired correctly, make sure you haven't accidentally muted any of the output channels in the 'Sounds and Audio Device Properties' in the windows control panel.

I went through 2 pairs of speakers before I realized this was the problem. The sound will be fine for a couple of months and then poof no sound. I don't know what the glitch is, but everytime the same bar has been muted.

Adjusting the volume in some applications (such as Real Player *spit*) will change the global system volume. Whenever my volume settings aren't where I'm used to them being, this is almost always the culprit.

Here's an screen capture of what your volume control settings should look like in most cases (with a mic & desktop set of speakers enabled).

If these settings do not work for your operating system or PC, a simple method of fixing the issue:
1) Right click an audio file stored on your PC (mp3 midi or wav etc).
2) Select 'open with' and then 'choose program'.
3) Browse through the programs shown there listed in the 'Open With' list and choose Windows Media. OR (even better) if you have it installed choose WinAmp or even Irfanview.
4) Check that box in the 'Open With' window that says 'always use the selected program to open this type of file'.

Hopefully this will fix the issue.

I feel like such a ninnie. Bought new speakers for nothing. I just had to reset my speaker volume settings in my control panel. Well, at least, my neighbor has a good set of speakers now...lol.

I'm glad you got it sorted out, and I hope your neighbor is happy with their new speakers
