I'm not really sure about this movie. If you listen to the director's commentary and the producer's commentary: http://www.thepetmovie.com/dstevens.htm http://www.thepetmovie.com/Jeanniel%20Neil.htm he seems to be confusing adult consensual BDSM relationships, with non-consensual international sex slavery market. There IS a sex slavery market in the world, and it is a problem in the world. But you don't do anybody any service if summarily dismiss ANY sort of negotiated domination and submissive relationship as evil. By that logic, we should shut down this site, and all the other BDSM alternative organizations because they clearly lead to kidnapping and forced sex labor. Sheesh. That's ridiculous. The story sounds just as muddled - a woman "consents" to become a slave, but then is forced to be sold into the slavery market. It actually sounds a bit far fetched. I'm not saying that its never happened, I'm just saying that I have never heard of that happening. Sounds a bit absurd. And if you think that writing stories that distort the real world is some how helping crack down on the forced sex labor markets, than your wrong. It just confuses the facts. I have talked to a LOT of people, both online and in the real world. And MOST of the people are turned on far more by submission - a consensual act of surrender, than by real coercion and rape. They are completely different things. Now if the guys were just writing a story about women in submission, who are whisked away by evil bad-guys and the handsome cool master who has to get his slaves back - well that sounds fun. I could go for that ride. But if you are trying to use that story to draw people's attention to the sex slave market? That's just confusing. My guess is that the writer/director seems quite threatened by the idea of a woman "consenting" to be a "pet" or "submissive", so has created this strange "fable" that he wants to pass of as a true story. He basically says as much in the commentary. The scenes in the trailer of the seduction of the slave DO look very hot, but I so tired of the media sending these total mixed messages about M/s BDSM relationships. "see what could happen! it's dangerous - you could be sold into slavery! You could be murdered!" Can anybody name a SINGLE display of a alternative or M/s type BDSM relationship that appeared in movies or TV that did NOT also involve a murder or crime? I can only name one: The Secretary. (I LOVE this movie!) The opposite is not true. Just in the last few years, off the top of my head (am I obsessing about this?) CSI: Has had a very well written and cool re-occurring dominatrix character, who unfortunately seems to have people getting murdered all around her. Close To Home: A wife murders her husband because he took her to swinger parties. Desperate Housewives: Had nice subplot with a husband seeing a pro-domina. Of course by the end of the season the dominatrix was in jail and the husband was murdered. House: One episode started with a husband "raping" his wife in what is later revealed to be consensual scene. But of course by the end of the show we discover that wife was actually trying to murder the husband. Oh phooey. They go on and on. crime and murder. crime and murder. Okay. I'll end my rant. I will reserve my full judgement until I see the damn thing.
