If you could time travel, what era would you go to, and why?

Spill it-!         [please]

juliaoceania -> RE: Time travel (6/17/2006 3:31:17 PM)

If I wouldnt be already dead i would want to be in the future...lol

cuddleheart50 -> RE: Time travel (6/17/2006 3:49:14 PM)

I would want to go to the future too....why?  I don't know, just seems better than the past.

juliaoceania -> RE: Time travel (6/17/2006 3:51:27 PM)

I know what happened in the past...smiles... maybe that is the same reason why for you?

cuddleheart50 -> RE: Time travel (6/17/2006 3:53:25 PM)

probably so.

Saint -> RE: Time travel (6/17/2006 3:58:38 PM)

I would have to say that I would love to travel back in time to the viking era. I would want to participate in the Oskoreien/Asgardsreien or "Ride of the Dead". I think that would be an experience that would forever change me and how I see and view the world.

pahunkboy -> RE: Time travel (6/17/2006 4:06:50 PM)

I would like to time travel 20 years forward, and 20 back.

Ild love to see the punchline....

too much further...hmm.   It would be hard not to talk about 2006ish.

I was trying to do this leave my body stuff.... then someone said not to mess with it. So i stopped.

It would be-- odd to be stuck in  a demession that one could never return from. [yikes]

cuddleheart50 -> RE: Time travel (6/17/2006 4:15:36 PM)

And just how do you plan on leaving your body?

pahunkboy -> RE: Time travel (6/17/2006 4:16:47 PM)

Woodstock- the original sounded fun. As did some of the protests of the 60s. [before my time.]

Was anyone here actually at Woodstock?

pahunkboy -> RE: Time travel (6/17/2006 4:19:14 PM)

Oh- well you focus and meditate...... supposedly we do this when we sleep. Under feng shui...which says no mirrors in the bedroom as it will discourage it...

Some religious meditations do the mediation to acheive nirvana.

hmmm.  nirvana...maybe there is a pill for that? lol

fergus -> RE: Time travel (6/17/2006 4:23:26 PM)

I'd want to travel to the middle of last week and NOT buy the scratch offs that didn't win ;)

ownedjulia -> RE: Time travel (6/17/2006 5:01:35 PM)

time travel is impossible, You cannot go to the future because it doesn't exist and travel tot the past would involve exotic forms of matter or a handy black hole or travelling faster than c
All of which cannot be done.

SlaveBitchLeanne -> RE: Time travel (6/17/2006 5:17:01 PM)

Time travel has not been shown to be impossible.  Einstein showed time was a dimension, just like forward-backward, left-right or up-down.  We affect all 4 by moving through them.  This is realised by the famous lorentz contractions, time slows as one travels faster and objects appear shorter.  Sadly this is relative to the speed of light, standing at 300,000km/s so we simply do not notice this effect but it is very well proven at fermilab and CERN.  This effect is linked to Einstein's relation E=mc^2 which underlies nuclear power, an obvious proof of his work.  Further Einstein showed if one travelled at the speed of light, time actually stops, as I mentioned earlier it slows the faster one travels, if one could travel faster than light you would indeed travel back in time.  Sadly this is not possible due to mass increasing with velocity, and reaching infinite value at the speed of light.

However, general relativity views gravity as a warp in space time, thus a large mass, like the sun, warps this fabric significantly, distorting the relation between time and space.  It was later shown by a mathematician that in a spherical universe one could travel to any time or location simply by traversing the correct trajectory.  We do not live in such a spherical universe, the shape of our universe is unknown, and so time travel remains a possibility.

Physicists are unsure of the feasbility of time travel, we may simply not have the technology yet.

SlaveBitchLeanne -> RE: Time travel (6/17/2006 5:20:15 PM)

Oh sorry I forgot to mention, astronauts travel at very high speeds orbiting earth, and do incur small relativistic effects.  I read once that the world record holder for time in space has travelled nearly a second in to the future although it did take over a year I believe.

pahunkboy -> RE: Time travel (6/17/2006 5:34:51 PM)

So in your estimation, then, would another dimension, plane, plataeu exist?

How would you explain ESP?

==========

it would be fun to be alive the day the Beatles came to America.

Respectfully, you are full of crap.  Please include the mathematical solution to the relativistic equations that you are interpreting that shows time stops when something travels at the speed of light.  IF that were true, how would stars shine?  LIGHT travels at the speed of light and time continues...

Einstein used a Cartesian coordinate system in his reference frames when he should have used a polar coordinate system. It should be rather obvious that translating the results obtained using spherical reference frames in order to form the rectangular frames that the Lorentz version of the formula is based on, is not only unnecessary, but introduces complications that serve only to cloud issues rather than clarify them.
The first repercussion of using polar coordinates is the realization that contrary to special relativity, horizontal distances in the direction of travel are effected in exactly the same manner that vertical distances are effected.  That is, what Einstein saw as an unchanging vertical distance between intersecting frames is actually the radius of the moving frame sphere and thus representative of all distances in the moving frame and not just vertical distances.  Moreover, it then becomes clear that real distances are not affected at all.  That is, the special property that Einstein assigned to vertical distances actually applies to all distances.  In fact, time variance as defined by the transformation formulas is contingent on exactly that proposition.  Using Einstein's equations to show time travel is possible is ludicrous because his equations work only in special cases.  All squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are squares.  Einstein told us that all squares are rectangles which is true, but then he postulated that ALL rectangles are squares.  Wrong.

*sigh*  Well, it USED to be a fun escapist thread.

I would buy a big delicious ice cream cone, and eat it... then go back in time until it was a big delicious ice cream cone and then eat it again... and then I would go back in time until it was a big delicious ice cream cone and then eat it once again... and then I would go back in time once more until it was a big delicious ice cream cone and then eat it all over once again... and then I would go back in time until it was a big delicious ice cream cone and then eat it once again...

...and about that time I would have a terble tummy ache, be dizzy as hell and need to turn my time machine off and take a knap!

Lordandmaster -> RE: Time travel (6/17/2006 9:22:37 PM)

I'd just scoot ahead to the time when physicists have figured out how the fuck time travel works, and then scoot back and lay HEAVY wagers that the New York Jets would win Super Bowl III.

AMEN Fergus!   Geeeze....people...GET A LIFE.  Or at least get a life with some fun in it.  Be creative.  The thread is about what you would do, not "Can you do it".  Sheeeesh.

I love this!  Now I was gonna point out that all you had to do, NastyDaddy, was go back one more time to before you ate the first cone, and then your tummy would be fine.  But in keeping with My own advice to "GET A LIFE", no, you got it just right...

...and also, my dog does this without the benefit of a time machine....yecccch!
