Or else they find a new way to draw attention to themselves on a larger scale. FR... If you look into the history of the Evangelical Movement in the United States, you will see that it is almost always aligned with populist causes and riding the left of the political spectrum. They aligned themselves as avid Jacksonian Democrats, through Bryant on to Wilson and FDR and but for Abortion are still in many areas, aligned with the Left today.

American democrats aren't left wing, there isn't a Marxist idea in sight. Welfare and other populist ideas are capitalist ideas to to prevent social unrest and keep capitalism afloat. The best that can be said about the Democrats is that they are capitalists with a conscience.

Populist != leftist and the christian evangelicals have never been left of center. For example William Jennings Bryan, note the spelling, was a prominent leader of the evangelical movement at the start of the 20th century and a populist Democrat. However the progressive movement was not part of the Democratic party at the time. It was actually part of the GOP back then and had elected one of the most revered Republican Presidents, and one that was proud of the Progressive label, Teddy Roosevelt.
