Been here. Done this. Used the t-shirt to wax the car.

Have fun.

I remember that thread, and it was quite an education for me.

According to his Wikipedia entry, before apparently losing his mind, Westboro honcho Fred Phelps was a dogged and effective civil rights lawyer. The profile notes, "In the 1980s, Phelps received awards from the Greater Kansas City Chapter of Blacks in Government and the Bonner Springs branch of the NAACP, for his work on behalf of black clients."

That discovery sparked two thoughts:

(a) It was a sobering reminder that not everyone fits into simple left/right boxes.

(b) As the abbess discovers at the end of The Bridge of San Luis Rey, you never know where you may find grace. Of course, here the discovery is coupled with the heartbreak of knowing how Phelps's crusading zeal has morphed antigay hatred.

Its a sobering reminder that people change in 3 decades.

Does not the existence of people like those at Westboro Baptist actually become an argument for culling the human race?

Goldwater looks better when comparing him with douches like Cantor.

Or else they find a new way to draw attention to themselves on a larger scale.

Phelps didn't just defend his clients, he did it in a way that drew sanctions and generated the same kind of outrage and publicity he thrives on today.

It's a sobering reminder of just how useless it is to engage with people who can't get their heads out of their prejudices, and the notions spoon fed to them by partisan media.

No, but just as free speech makes it so much easier to spot the assholes, the existence of Westboro Baptist makes it simpler to spot the kind of folks who would advocate culling humans they disagree with from the race.

Food for thought, there buddy.

If you look into the history of the Evangelical Movement in the United States, you will see that it is almost always aligned with populist causes and riding the left of the political spectrum. They aligned themselves as avid Jacksonian Democrats, through Bryant on to Wilson and FDR and but for Abortion are still in many areas, aligned with the Left today.

Considering these people's lack of compassion, are you sure they are human?

American democrats aren't left wing, there isn't a Marxist idea in sight. Welfare and other populist ideas are capitalist ideas to to prevent social unrest and keep capitalism afloat. The best that can be said about the Democrats is that they are capitalists with a conscience.

Populist != leftist and the christian evangelicals have never been left of center. For example William Jennings Bryan, note the spelling, was a prominent leader of the evangelical movement at the start of the 20th century and a populist Democrat. However the progressive movement was not part of the Democratic party at the time. It was actually part of the GOP back then and had elected one of the most revered Republican Presidents, and one that was proud of the Progressive label, Teddy Roosevelt.

Laughable......You missed all the anti-gay posters then ? Or all the Koran burning ? The majority of Evangelicals have always supported right leaning issues.

Mostly for the last 40 years or so.
Before that, Evangelicals tended to actually act like Christians. Yaknow stuff like taking care of the poor, love thy neighbor, hate the sin, not the sinner.

That statement demonstrates utter ignorance of who these fucked up people are. Learn a little about them, and you won't post such foolish things.

I know who they are. Are you saying that you think they're more extreme and homophobic than Nazis and Islamist terrorists?

Caught a special report on Current TV, huh?

Sorry, but the ignorance of the first post still overshadows the arrogance of the second.
