I was getting on the turnpike when I remebered the suggestion to brighten someones day by paying the toll of the car behind you, I decided to do this but there was no one at the tollbooth so I got on for free woohooo!!!]

You definatly aren't from NY....to get on or off this god forsaken island costs a fortune.............the bridge out of Brooklyn onto SI is $9 and the one back in from NJ is $6..........if I paid the toll for 3 cars I'd be broke lol

Status: offline 		This happened when i lived up in Michigan still. 
It was a snowy day, i decided to go the the mall in south bend and just do a bit of shopping.  I went into Sears, as i entered i saw this man kind of pacing back and forth, the store clerks were asking him to leave.  The man was dressed in very minimal clothing, the shoes he had on were duct taped together, with holes everywhere.  This happened to be the middle of winter up there!
I have to say, i just stood there, kind of frozen for a moment (not because of the cold either).  The man was not asking for anything, i think he just wanted to get warm.  I went up the the man and told him to come with me.  The store clerks just looked at me, then also called security and followed me.  I proceeded to buy the man a pair of warm boots...flannel shirt...pants...socks...gloves and a coat.
This was my first experience with seeing a person without so much as the basic necesseties. (how fortunate we are, and how much we take for granted at times)  The store security did not leave the whole time during this checkout.  The man did not even know what to say to me............he cried, then left.  I have never seen him since, but think of him to this day.
After the man had left, the store security told me that they did not appreciate my gesture, it caused a scene.  I told them that i could care less what they thought and wanted to see the store manager and if that meant getting him/her out of their nice warm home to get here....then so be it.  I would wait.
I did not have to wait, the manager was on site.  I proceeded to tell him just what had happened, how rude i thought his staff was and that i would never give sears my business again.  Sometimes there are just people in this world that need a little help.  You never know what kind of impact you have on a person. You may never know...............................but "i" know.

Status: offline 		I know many olk who have apparently done randome acts of kindness motivated simply by either ego or the knowledge that their stakes in local communities will rise.. Sort of devalues things some what.. I believe in the power of three. What you give (be it good or bad) will be returned threefold.

What random acts of kindness have I done at any time? 

That is between myself, my Goddess, some times Neets and perhaps the recipients of what I have done...

Status: offline 		Sometimes your act of  kindness might be a litteral diffrence between life and death.

Someone could be on the verge of killing themself or going on a mass killing spree and your one act of kindness brought them away from those thoughts.

Seriously, I think random acts of kindness are a good policy, but being a decent, all around person is a better policy.  I believe Kharma is justified.

Status: offline 		There is a solid ethical base in keeping the good deeds we do private.  In Jewish tradition, we are taught that all "tzedakah" (charity) is good -- but among the  highest level of good deeds is giving "where the donor doesn't know to whom he gives and the recipient doesn't know from whom he receives".

While all of you are good people, and you do good deeds of which you are justly proud, I have to vote with IronBear and RavenMuse here.

(By the way, Maimonides, the great 8th C. rabbinnic scholar, set out eight distinctive "levels" of charitable giving.  The "bottom" rung is a gift where the donor is publicized and the recipient is known.  Giving anonymously occupies a higher position.  the second - highest level of giving is the "double blind" where the donor doesn't know to whom he or she gives and the recipient doesn't know where the gift came from.  But the highest level of giving is someone who establishes a personal relationship with the needy person, helping him with a loan or a partnership in a way that doesn't make him feel subordinate.  "Give a man a fish, he'll eat for a day, teach him to fish, and he'll eat forever.")

Status: offline 		I paid for an old lady's prescriptions at the pharmacy.  She'd just realized she'd lost her wallet and was really shaken up, and she needed her medicine.  I'd just received a bonus from work, so I paid for them.  It just seemed like the right thing to do. 

As for a not so random act of kindness, last Friday I filled 500 luminaries with sand and candles for my sister's wedding (which was gorgeous) then turned around and wired 100 Ball jars to hang from trees with candles in them.  My hands were raw when I was done, but it needed to be done.

Where to start…

Before my back got too bad to work under the hood of a car I would pull over and help people who broke down. I usually changed at least 1 tire a week and one evening I worked on a ladies car in the middle of nowhere for 6 hours and rebuilt her carburetor on the spot with a gerber multi-tool.

2 weeks ago my oldest made a new friend who he thought lost his house in a fire. I just happened to have a mobile out in the field I wasn’t doing anything with at the moment so we decided to furnish it and give it to his family. Come to find out it wasn’t his family that lost their house.

Last year another family lost their home to a fire and we gave them a truckload of clothes, toys, and a few appliances. We gave tem an old t.v. that wasn’t the greatest but it worked. A few months after that another families car died and I gave them a car.

I really don’t mind giving people that need things what I can spare, my good fortune is a little gooder than most. What bothers me is after the fact they keep hanging around wanting more.

One day while grocery shopping there was a elderly lady in front of me at the till. She put through all the items for her cat first and told the clerk once the totally reached a certain amount to let her know as it was all the money she had. I told the clerk to put it all through and I would pay the difference.

I know many of our elderly people are on an extremely tight budget, and their pets are often the only companionship they have left in the world. It didn't cost me hardly anything and to be sure that the lady had healthy fruit and veggies for herself was payment enough. She didn't want to let me but I'm kind of stubborn, and I wouldn't take no for an answer.

Status: offline 		For me it can be something as simple as holding a door open for someone saying thank you etc...I love doing meals on wheels or volunteering at the animal shelter.

Status: offline 		The things we do with out weighing the return we'll receive are in my opinion the most rewarding. We see something that needs to be done or that we know is the right thing to do and just step up and do it.  As simple as holding open a door, letting someone merge ahead of us during rush hour, seeing a lost child and helping them find their parents. To offering someone a home, a meal or a pair of shoes *s*

I didn't post my first poting on here for a pat on the head. I can understand why IB and others would rather not say what they did. But if by one person reading this thread and realizing how easy it is to help someone else then I'm willing to write down one of the things I've done.

Acts of kindness are viewed differently by different ppl. Something I'd do with out thinking about it others would see as a big deal.

A lady i knew a few years ago ended up in the Newspaper and was terribly embarrassed about it. What had happend is a blind gentleman had slipped on the ice and couldn't get up. Many people walked by and ignored him. She crossed the street to help him because it was the right thing to do. He was greatful and sent a letter to the editor saying she was a good semaritan. She just said it was something any decent person would have done and didn't deserve such a hoopla made over it. To him she was a hero. she viewed herself as just a decent person.

Status: offline 		For a true random act of kindness i think the best thing is to "pay it forward".

We were out to breakfast recently and when we asked for our bill the wiatress said, oh those people that just left paid it. We were floored.  This is a regular restaurant for us, nd we don't look needy, so my guess is they were paying it forward from someone paying their bill once.  Now we are searching for just the right couple to do it for.
