I loved Algebra. I wish someone would come up with a reason to hate geomtery - now THAT is a cause I could fully support!

Most people have no problem with math, until the alphabet is added. That's where most people get turned off. It's sad that they don't see the fun is really just starting at that point. [:D]

The more theoretical it gets, the harder it is to visualise and so grasp. It's a shame, but it's also human nature.

I was the exact opposite. I pretty much hated all high school math--except geometry. That made me wonder if there might be some pattern to what kinds of math folks like. So for three decades now, I've been asking people about this, and I think there is indeed a pattern:

-- People who like math tend to dislike geometry.

-- People who like geometry tend otherwise to dislike math.

The pattern doesn't hold up all the time, but I've been struck by how often it does.

Even did a CM thread about it way back when.

We now return to your normally scheduled programing.

I'm not so sure about the math/geometry differences, but, I think math/trigonometry might be better.

Personally, and I know I'm an odd one, but I simply love math. I did better in calc-based physics than in non-calc-based physics. Twenty one years after my last official math class, I found that I had missed some stuff back then, and that stuff was very interesting to have an understanding of, and also, that I really missed Calculus.

I willingly self-identify as a "math slut."

No problem at all.

The mindset behind algebra is very similar to that behind trig and calculus. Very graph-oriented, with lots of problems.

Geometry is very different and is based upon proofs.

Statistics is yet anther form of math. I never could figure out what the hell it was nattering about because it was done like a humanities class, not math.

isn't that because the thrust of statistics is about how to interpret the figures, rather than the actual mathematics?

Count me as matching your pattern.

I flipped through my geometry textbook, it all made perfect sense, and I did very well in the class. Barely squeaked by the rest of the math classes, although I enjoy reading about the higher level stuff when someone else is working out the calculus and such.

Depends on who is doing the stats... Some people use statistics to see if the real world can be made to work in theory.

Another bit of educational research that has been replicated many times:

Girls tend to do well in algebra but struggle with geometry, which is a subject at which boys seem to have an easier time excelling.

Hey - I didn't write the research, but it has been borne out over and over. It has something to do with spatial reasoning.

I am a girl and I like pink and frilly stuff so I say geometry had it out for me :)

Never had problems with mathematics or geometry, only with numbers.

I am annoyed when I have to express a constant in the form of a number and fail to see how people understand something better that way. The last semester I only attended 30 minutes worth of a lecture and then left because the teacher would go over the concept again and again but instead of using the very illustrative general approach, he would plug in numbers and muddle everything.

When I was in graduate school I learned to both love and hate statistics. On the plus side....even geometry sounded attractive after hearing the phrase "no significance" 4,000,000 times.......

May I point out that given the current state of the American Education system, math, english, reading and pe is falling way below standard. Fox news need not worry about this problem, the kids aint learning the shit.

Stats, if you can keep away from the biased interpretations is little more than more math. Not surprisingly, I did just fine in stats, too. While taking stats classes, I recall sitting there wondering why everyone always griped about them.

Not everyone's nature.

Both my partner and I agreed that we found algebra WAY easier than arithmetic. Logic is clear and simple, it's those numbers that confused us.

And when I was at school we had lots of arithmetic problems on the lines of "A has a sack of apples, how can he hand them out so everyone gets a fair share?" Luckily no Fox News reporters were around to point out that this was indoctrinating us with socialistic ideas of distributing property.
