ShaharThorne -> ARGH!!! IBS attacks!!! (1/17/2013 7:34:46 PM)

I have Irritable Bowel Syndrome. No matter what I do, I get the cramps and end up in the bathroom. Had 3 attacks last week and had 2 attacks today. The doctor does not know what to do and I have been eliminating certain foods from my diet. When my Medicare kicked in a few years ago, had a coloscopy done and nothing was found. I try adding whole grains to my diet but that is not helping out...Mom thinks its the gluten and I try to find foods without the gluten in them. Unfortunately there is not a specialty bakery here in town and I am the one who buys the lean proteins. I don't know why my intestines are doing this but it is literally making me stay home in case I have an attack. I already gave up smoked sausage because of the fat content.

Next to seeing yet another specialist, I am at my wits end. I endured this disease for several years and sometimes eating one food does not hurt me but the next time it does. I am even scared to eat ice cream. I have lost 75 pounds. I drink one diet soda a week and am trying to swear off HFCS. I allow myself some dark chocolate (no attacks after eat that).

Any ideas? I am giving up a social life because of this...

My mother had IBS and saw a chiropractor. He manipulated her pyloric valve nonsurgically and fixed it.

I've had IBS on and off. I go to a chiropractor and he or she adjusts my spine where the nerves are that control my stomach. It clears things up for three to six months.

I am due to see my doctor soon so I will ask for a referral to a chiro. Last time I had one was to get my back into shape after a nasty fall. I just don't want to go through another coloscopy again and be told that there is nothing wrong.

DesFIP -> RE: ARGH!!! IBS attacks!!! (1/21/2013 8:00:51 PM)

I gave up dairy years ago. I managed not too badly for 30 years. Then two years ago it all went to hell again. I take stool softeners because I find that if I don't get constipated, then I don't get the attacks of diarrhea. When a couple of stool softeners a day stop working, I add a dose of Miralax.

I've been thinking about giving up wheat. I'm not even going to try to find gluten free bread. It doesn't taste the same. I'm just going to switch to brown rice instead of noodles. And maybe spaghetti squash instead of spaghetti. Salads instead of sandwiches.

And nothing shows up in the colonoscopy.

I have had IBS since 2003 and it is a bitch!!! I eat gluten free and have to be consistent with it or I am in terrible pain for days. Sounds very much like it is the gluten. I get Rudi's GF bread and it is awesome, and it is expensive eating like this but what can You do? I have always been shy to do anal and more so because I am aware...although Sir well I do not have a choice in the matter. As for going to the Chiro...I may have to do that if it helps...thanks.

I've had IBS for 6 years now. Mine was actually brought on by stress/depression. Stress still causes an attack for me, but I kept a food diary, had the skin tests for different foods, and eventually it was narrowed down to pork! It's not unheard of for IBS suffers to find pork is a trigger. Your doctor should be able to prescribe pills for IBS. When I get an attack, I take them 2-3 times a day until about a week after the last attack. That seems to work well for me now. But boy do I miss bacon!

DesFIP -> RE: ARGH!!! IBS attacks!!! (2/9/2013 6:02:43 PM)

Turkey bacon?

I only found out such a thing existed a couple of weeks ago! I'm still trying to find it in any supermarkets near me though. I don't think it's as popular in the UK.

A friend of mine drinks Alo vera juice. It has been a massive success for her ...and her IBS was very bad.
I suppose everyone is different and it may well not work for others

We have two kinds of turkey bacon in the local supermarket. Don't rule out chicken bacon either.

Aren't there any health food stores in the UK that could carry something similar?

Asda sells it DS...I just pm'd her

This site has some gluten free recipes in it. She is opening a bakery and you are supposed to be able to order stuff online but I am not sure if that part is up and running yet. She also talks a lot about her food problems in her blogs and might be able to answer any questions you have. Hope it helps and feel better.

I've had it on and off for years but since 2009 it has been pretty bad. It doesn't stop my life but I know where every bathroom is in every store I shop at and avoid places that do not have public restrooms, I also carry wet wipes with me everywhere. My last guy sort of understood but he only sort of understood anything.

gigi08 -> RE: ARGH!!! IBS attacks!!! (2/17/2013 4:55:41 PM)

There are meds out there for IBS to help with the spasms. Bentyl is a name brand. Dicyclomine is the generic form. I just did a quick search and found that there is something available in the UK as well by the name of Kolanticon. I found that from wikipedia. You may want to ask your doctor about what may be available for you. I wish you all the best and sympathize.

I too have IBS. When it flares up, I'm either locked up tight for days or trotting down the hall every time I blink.

I tried to no avail to self treat, so went to the doctor. I had been on anti biotics a few months ago for a bladder infection. (Different dr prescribed antibiotics) most likely the antibiotics killed off some of the good anti bodies that your stomach needs and that triggered the flare up. He subscribed bentyl. He also told me to drink water, walk daily and make sure I consume 25-28 grams of fiber minimum daily. Be it drinks, cereal, fiber bars or chewable fiber pills.

I also take gas-x for the bloating. I cut out all caffeine, fried foods and carbonated drinks. Things are settling down, but at least for me, I have to stay vigilant.

Here's some more food for thought. Preliminary findings are hopeful. Go to the Stuff You Should Know podacast (on iTunes). The January 24th, 2013 podcast might be informative.

DreamyLadySnow -> RE: ARGH!!! IBS attacks!!! (3/9/2013 10:15:48 AM)

I've had it for years, as well. Getting my gall bladder removed was a HUGE help, although I am not sure why. Have to avoid greasy foods now, but I'll live.
I went through a phase where all I could eat wihtout feeling like crap was chocolate!
I'd say definately cut down on the wheat, processed foods. Add some probiotics. There is a new one called Align that is FDA approved for help with IBS, apparently. Very expensive so I haven't tried it.
If your symptoms are so bad that you can't even have a life, I'd definately see about taking meds

MercTech -> RE: ARGH!!! IBS attacks!!! (3/15/2013 2:57:41 PM)

IBS with some people is caused by an imbalance of symbiotic intestinal flora ("good bacteria" if you don't speak microbiology)

Some research labs are using fecal transplant for severe cases. (How long before someone turns that into a fetish?)

Anyway, after gall bladder surgery I was plagued by bouts of IBS. I've taken to using a pro-biotic supplement to help keep it under control. (Megaflora is the brand currently in the fridge)

Note: Probiotic supplements need to be kept refrigerated to keep the bacteria cultures viable (alive)

kalikshama -> RE: ARGH!!! IBS attacks!!! (3/18/2013 4:57:07 PM)

My Mom had to make a lot of changes due to IBS - eliminating foods and adding supplements, the only one of which I can remember is acacia powder. (Use coupon code IBA153 for $10 off your first order.)

She has also definitely found a connection between stress and IBS.

ShaharThorne -> RE: ARGH!!! IBS attacks!!! (3/18/2013 8:18:01 PM)

Guess what guys...my daughter has IBS-c now. The doctor proscribe Linzess and she is having movements daily now. In fact she calls it explosive diarrhea, so she takes the pills every other day (she is in college and does not want to run out of class for the bathroom).

Now if I can get this drug for my Mom...This is looking like a family affair.
