Like the subject line says, I passed the written portions of my two comprehensive exams (political theory and American government). Friday, I move forward to the oral examination of both fields, and then I am ABD (all but dissertation) status of my Ph.D. Soon, I shall be Dr. sarbonn.

I'm not really sure what to do after that as I went back to school to better myself for future servitude one day, and this pretty much ends the quest of what I was seeking to do.

My dissertation is on the viability of the two main political parties in the US, with an emphasis on third parties. At least that's what it looks like my dissertation will be on. Still needs to get beyond the proposal stage.

Sounds like quite an undertaking, glad it's you and not me.

Congratulations! As someone who crammed 4 years of college into 5, I'm impressed!

Congrats!
I have one question though that I always wanted to ask...
If you have a doctorate degree but you are not a medical doctor then can you use "Dr" in front of your name?
If you do use "Dr." in front of your name then would you also put "Ph.D" after it? Does it matter? Is one way more correct than the other?

Just curious

Great topic and especially relevant given Ralph Nader's role in the last two presidential elections. Just a comment... I always wondered why there weren't more than 2 viable parties (I know there are others but none with any realistic hope of affecting any outcome even minorly) but one day while traveling in Europe I saw a news topic regarding Italy where apparantly a multi-party system somehow emerged (due to fractioning or something) and how the government became paralyzed because no single political party could get a critical mass to agree on a single issue. It made me appreciate our two party system just a little more. (this happened about a decade ago or so).

Yes, when a political scientist gets his or her doctorate, the title "Dr." appears before their name. They don't have to qualify it in any way.

I always joke that once I get my doctorate, I can finally perform surgery.
