Fightdirecto -> Is it possible to have a 'Loyal Opposition' today? (1/23/2013 10:41:55 AM)

From “RED STATE - POWERFUL CONSERVATIVE VOICES” contributor Erick Erickson, January 20, 2013, titledThe Loyal Opposition:

quote:

Congratulations Mr. President on your second inaugural.

Saying that makes some of you really enraged. I said the same on Twitter shortly after his official swearing in. Several of the replies were embarrassing and atrocious. Some accused the man elected by a majority of Americans of treason. Some accused him of willfully destroying the nation.

I believe the President’s policies are destructive and will harm our economy, our nation, and our sense of national self long term. I believe his policies have the effect of turning us into subjects of the government, not citizens in charge of it. Because of his expansion of the social safety net funded through class warfare, Mr. Obama’s policies will cause too many Americans’ fortunes to rise and fall with those of the government, unable to chart a course for themselves apart from government.

But I DO NOT THINK THE PRESIDENT MEANS TO DO THIS MALICIOUSLY. I DO NOT THINK HE IS TREASONOUS. I DO NOT HATE HIM. I AM NOT OUTRAGED BY IT. THE PRESIDENT HAS DONE WHAT HE SET OUT TO DO. I CANNOT BE OUTRAGED BY HIM DOING WHAT HE SET OUT TO DO. I AM FAR MORE OUTRAGED BY THE REPUBLICANS NOT DOING WHAT THEY SAID THEY WOULD DO…

What I am finding is that among conservatives there is too much outrage, piss, and vinegar. It makes our ideas less effective. WE HAVE BECOME HUMORLESS, ANGRY OPPONENTS OF THE PRESIDENT INSTEAD OF HAPPY WARRIORS SELLING BETTER IDEAS. WE ARE NOT EVEN SELLING IDEAS.

CONSERVATIVES, FRANKLY, HAVE BECOME PURVEYORS OF OUTRAGE INSTEAD OF PREACHERS FOR A CAUSE. INSTEAD OF SHOWING HOW INCREASING GOVERNMENT HARMS PEOPLE, HOW FREE MARKETS HELP PEOPLE, AND HOW CONSERVATIVE POLICIES BENEFIT ALL AMERICANS, WE SCREAM “BENGHAZI” AND “FAST & FURIOUS.”

WE’RE OFF KEY AND OFF MESSAGE. WE’VE BECOME PROFESSIONAL VICTIMS DIALED UP TO 10 ON THE OUTRAGE METER. WHO THE HELL WANTS TO LISTEN TO CONSERVATIVES WHINING AND MOANING ALL THE TIME ABOUT THE OUTRAGE DU JOUR? SERIOUSLY?
Mitt Romney ran a campaign on just how bad things are, but he was rejected by a majority of Americans who felt like he really did not care about them and really had no plans to improve their lives.

Bitching about Benghazi doesn’t do that either.

Be mad at me if you need to. Feel free to express your moral outrage and indignity at me. BUT THEN SHUT UP AND FOCUS ON CONVINCING PEOPLE NOT THAT THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES DULY ELECTED BY A MAJORITY OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE IS A TRAITOR WILLFULLY TRYING TO DESTROY THE COUNTRY, BUT THAT OUR POLICIES WILL ALLOW PEOPLE TO MAKE THE MOST OF THEIR LIVES AND NOT BE DEPENDENT ON THE RISING AND FALLING FORTUNES OF WASHINGTON, D.C.

Be happy. The anger is unbecoming of the party of Lincoln and Reagan.

And IF YOU MUST BE ANGRY, DON’T BE ANGRY AT A PRESIDENT DOING WHAT HE SET OUT TO DO, BE ANGRY AT A REPUBLICAN ESTABLISHMENT NOT DOING...WELL...MUCH OF ANYTHING.

I'm showing my age, but this reminds me of things William F. Buckley wrote when he was working to expel the John Birchers from the Republican Party in 1962.

Everyone who tries to toss the Neo-Con-Crazies from the GOP gets thrown out themselves.... Remember Dede Scozzafava?

Very few of the paleocons left.....and get called RINOs etc when then stand up.Collen Powell being the latest victim.

Still defending bush or denying bush-damage seems to be what separates the men from the girls and considering that crazy does`t really wash off......we will probably never have a "loyal opposition" till after the GOP splits.

I couldn't agree more with the article. However, Republicans and conservatives are not the only ones guilty of this. Doesn't anybody remember the presidency of GWB? Democrats and liberals called him every name in the book and equating him with Hitler was a weekly event.

I missed the absolute shut down of the Senate and the downgrading of the nation's credit rating due to Democrats refusing to cooperate with W.

Disliking a person is a far cry from refusing to keep government operating.

...only because it was all so much more accurate. He allowed the pentagon (and NY) to be attacked...an impeachable offense in my book. That's outright incompetence.

He and the repubs deliberately cut taxes and then deliberately lied to get us into a war of premption (the neo-fascists think they the US is the new Rome) Deliberately pandered to the elderly by being anything but a real conservative...passing a drug benefit again with borrowed money. Socialism for the most sincere voters hey.

Bush deliberatley used an 1863 OCC law to stop the states (all 50) attys' gen. from going after the fraudulent lenders. (WAMU, Countrywide etc.) The Bush admin. (SEC) deliberately allowed shit-paper to called AAA paper to sell anywhere they could. [It] was a partner and totally facilitated a US Govt. taxpayer, multi-$trillion bailout...of Billionaires. Socialism for the rich.

He helped compose and signed the patriot and homeland sec. acts that strips our rights and deliberately modifed habeus corpus and posse comitatus to use the military to take our guns away.

Shall I go on ?

The problem lies in that far too much of the neocon rable is very much in power and is throwing ithe message around, corrupting the repubs offering up only what the OP decries.

I haven't met a repub conservative or not, that has agreed with most repub policies since 2001 or engaged in such vitriol about the big, bad Obama. Almost everyone fears exactly what the OP fears...partisan rancor as far as the eye can see.

Meanwhile, this perspective created about Obama is functional...he is this evil or that evil but for the big picture, irrespective of all other forces, will continue to do what he needs to do...to stay alive.

Moonhead -> RE: Is it possible to have a 'Loyal Opposition' today? (1/26/2013 11:21:20 AM)

It's perfectly possible to have a loyal opposition.
The problem is merely that the current opposition party is more interested in opposition than anything as trivial as the will or best interests of the electorate that put them in opposition.

Montana32DDD -> RE: Is it possible to have a 'Loyal Opposition' today? (1/26/2013 1:01:34 PM)

It is impossible to be a loyal opposition when the current Democrat Admin is not held to any standards. A three judge panel declared President Obama is abusing power. President Obama just can not be bothered to follow the constitution. this is a documented fact. We have the first dead ambassador in decades, and the left blames.... Republicans. Hillary actually testified before congress asking "What difference, at this point, does this make?" Leftists cheered. Meanwhile, politics itself has degenerated in to nothing more than who can come up with the best republican bash. This is all I expect from Democrats anymore, and this thread, like all the others, never lets me down. We had eight solid years of Democrats calling Bush every name in the book, and no, not ALL of them were warranted. The Democrat hatred for Bush was actually quantified as a Disease it was so pervasive. Any claim that the hatred of Bush is based on fact is just that, a false claim. So, eight years of complaining about Bush has been replaced with four years of bitching about republicans. Any criticism of President Obama is deemed racist. I honestly do not believe that four more years of leftist lies about Republicans is going to help anyone. It certainly has not done the country any good. Every measurement shows President Obama is not an awesome leader. In Fact, the numbers point out a very different story. Unemployment, higher, taxes, higher, government debt, higher, people on food stamps, higher, people on welfare, higher, survivors of Sandy still do not have power. The list goes on and on. Democrats shame the country by refusing to discuss any of these topics in a sane manner. All Democrats bring to the table is the hatred of their fellow country men. How much money did the Obama Campaign spend in Mexico, advertising for foreign votes? All I know is if you have to go to foreign countries to get your votes, you probably do not have the country's best interest in mind. I said for years that Democrats would be more likely to pick Muslims as their actual partners before their fellow countrymen, Republicans. Then Al Gore sold Current TV to Aljazeera even tho Glen Beck offered to purchase the company. The first thing Aljazeera did was get rid of Elliot Sptizer, a Democrat who lost his job as a politician because he liked high priced hookers. I did not invent this, I did not make up this. this is just fact. The Democrats response to this post will be to attack. Attack Me, Attack Glen Beck, Attack Republicans, and attack the very constitution this country is based on. Democrats have zero desire to have an honest debate about anything. This is why the country is going to hell.
Cheers.

you are kidding right?

government "extracts" so fucking much money from people with a monopoly like that and the power to keep it that way who in government would "really" allow it to shut down.

So he isn't being held to a standard but an appelate court threw out the appointments as unconstitutional. Certainly sounds like he was held to a standard to me.

What she actually said was what difference did it make how the attack happened compared to getting to work finding and bringing to justice the attackers. Which is true.

So I'm not allowed to despise him because he ordered torture and there by stained the reputation of this nation I love?
