This is a 22 year-old episode of Law & Order that I just finished watching. The story concerns a murderous "dominatrix," and it casts BDSM - particularly dom women - in what I would have to call a negative light.

Anyone else seen this? Sorry, I can't find a clip. It's season 1, episode 10, available on Amazon instant. I think Xfinity also has it if you subscribe with them.

I have access to Amazon instant, so I will have to take a look. Is it Special Victims, or just Law and Order?

I am not familiar with any television series that portrays BDSM in either a positive way, or even in a realistic way. But then again, it has been my experience that the news media will practically never show a BDSM news story, unless it is one in which a person was affected in a very negative, and criminally negligent way.

If it's the episode I'm thinking of, it's the one where the lady is a socialite and the guy that gets charged with the killing is a city employee that has something to do with the arts?

Even if that isn't the one you're describing, the one I just described is from probably the first season (George Dzundza was in it).

What I found a bit ... off was that they spend a good portion of the episode absolutely ridiculing the D/s lifestyle and then, the prosecutor adopts a "dominant" stance to break the city official who was charged with the crime.

First off, I thought his performance inside a performance (the part where he was trying to top the city official) was laughable and while I'm not submissive, I can't imagine anyone falling for a prosecutor behaving that way. Maybe I'm jaded.

I recommend every episode of the classic series up until about season 7 but, in kind of a left-handed compliment kind of way; notice, as you watch, the careful under-current of attempting to change the way we think, based upon television. So many of these episodes are "wrong" (the defendant would never actually be convicted) that one can only wonder why Mr. Wolf has such an axe to grind?

I'm always into the psychology of the characters, anyway.

Peace and comfort,

Michael

Yes that's the one, and it is the first season. Good observation about the DA. My focus had waned by that point, because I was stuck on the sickening plot point where the "dominatrix" wanted to watch the guy choke to death.

Exactly what would you suggest the news media do? Show stories about a successful dungeon (which is actually an advertisement)? I mean really, most news stories are about negative stuff period.

Perhaps instead of whining about it not being shown in a "positive" light, you should be grateful that they don't think the average, day to day BDSM stuff is interesting enough to be news.

Like it or not, when they report the bad stuff it is because someone has used BDSM as an excuse for their behavior. That's just the way it works. These days people will use whatever they can as an excuse for their behavior, i.e. BDSM, video games, rock music, etc. Sadly, when it comes to BDSM, it does have more of an attraction for some sick people because they think it gives them some justification for their behavior.

LL, If I were to answer in kind I might say something like this: "You silly little thing. You don't have a clue what you are talking about".

But that would be insulting. And on top of that I do not know the first thing about you, except from the brief glimpse a profile shows.

So how 'bout we reach an agreement. I won't insult you by speaking down to you and you don't insult me by telling me I am "whining". As you know nothing more about me than I do about you.

Deal?

My view on the media and why it does what it does is somewhat different from yours. The media loves to report bad incidents of BDSM because it is sensationalism. And sensationalistic stories drives viewership, which drives income. They make no attempt to discern whether it really is a case of BDSM gone bad, or just plain old fashioned abusive behavior. And they don't do that because they really don't care.

Your comment before that is the one that I do find the most curious though. Why should I be grateful the news media doesn't think the average, day to day BDSM relationship is worth reporting? That statement appears - appears mind you - that you think BDSM should remain hidden. Whether you actually think that, of course, I do not know. But that is what I got out of your comment.

I think that the news media reporting on healthy BDSM relationships would be wonderful. It would be a tiny start in re-educating the public that what we do isn't "sick" or "disgusting and demeaning". Rather like it is now PC to show loving homosexual couples on the news from time to time.

Reporting healthy BDSM relationships wouldn't be news, anymore than reporting a happy marriage would. I can that's the part you don't quite understand.

I don't disagree that the media loves sensationalism. Sound bites get people to watch the news.

When those stories break, it is easy to say it isn't "BDSM," but the reality is that more often than not, it IS someone who used BDSM as an excuse for their behavior and then it went to far. Rarely was it going to far by accident. More often it is going to far because the person was really an abuser and they didn't really understand BDSM to begin with, thinking instead they had found something that would let them be abusive with an excuse.

There is an episode of House that shows a relationship between a female Dom and a male sub, who is the (medically) sick one. Although quite mocking at times (what episode of House isn't?), I think they do a decent job of portraying the relationship as having genuine roots in the two caring for one another. One of the key things for me was that as the sub's condition worsened he stopped being submissive, and it was this that was portrayed as being unnatural for him. It would have been so much easier to go with his submission being 'cured' along with his medical issues but I think the writers went for a more complex portrayal of the relationship, which is to be applauded

CSI ran a story line involving Lady Heather. A professional who ran a dungeon. They portrayed her as intelligent and caring. The Mentalist had a show involving transgendered people (not bdsm, but alternative) They also showed them to be intelligent and painted them in a positive light. As to the news, they show the stories that they think will get them more viewers. Normal doesn't cut it for them. They want the outragious.

Ah, Lady Heather. Shame on ME for not remembering. Yes that was one of the more accurate representations I have seen.

And I thought this thread was about the big closing number from the Mel Brooks movie "The Producers"

Prisoners of love!
Blue skies above
Can't keep our hearts in jail!
Prisoners of love,
Our turtle dove's
Soon coming 'round with bail.

Oh, you can lock us up
And lose the key,
But hearts in love
Are always free!

Prisoners of love,
Blue skies above,
'Cause we're still prisoners ,
We're still prisoners,
We're still prisoners of love!

I may appear to be free
But I'm just a prisoner of your love
And I may seem alright
And smile when you leave
But my smiles are just a front, just a front
And I play it off but I'm dreaming of you
And I'll keep my cool but I'm feelin'
I Try to say good bye and I choke,
I Try to walk away and I stumble,
Though I try to hide it; it's clear,
My world crumbles when you are not near.

I Try (excerpt)

meh

I never really care what is and isn't shown in media in a negative or positive light. It doesn't affect my own life so it's not a big deal to me. It's just a tv show.
