A ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA MAN POINTED AN AK-47 RIFLE AT HIS TEENAGE DAUGHTER IN A DISPUTE OVER HER GETTING TWO B'S INSTEAD OF STRAIGHT A'S, according to a criminal complaint filed Friday, Jan 25.

The Ramsey County attorney's office charged Kirill Bartashevitch, 51, of St. Paul with two counts of terroristic threats, one against the girl and the other against her mother. Bartashevitch is a Minneapolis Public Schools employee. The complaint gives this account:

Police were called to a school on Jan. 17 after a school social worker received a report from a parent who said she'd been monitoring her son's electronic communications and saw a message to her son. In the message, Bartashevitch's daughter said HER FATHER HAD POINTED A RIFLE AT HER.

The social worker interviewed the girl. She said it happened Jan. 13 at the family's Hamline-Midway home in the 1700 block of Englewood Avenue, when she and Bartashevitch were arguing about her grades. The teen swore at her father and said she "hated" him, the complaint said.

Bartashevitch grabbed his new AK-47 -- HE'D RECENTLY BOUGHT IT BECAUSE HE FEARED SUCH WEAPONS WOULD SOON BE BANNED -- and pointed it at the girl. The girl said her mother jumped between them while Bartashevitch was pointing the gun. Bartashevitch ordered the girl to go to her room, which she did.

The teen "said she wasn't scared because she didn't think that the gun was loaded," the complaint said. "She did say that she was afraid to go home." The officer made arrangements to place the girl in a shelter.

A Ramsey County child protection worker interviewed the teen's 52-year-old mother, who verified the girl's account. The mother added that BARTASHEVITCH HAD ALSO PUSHED THE MOTHER TO THE FLOOR.

The child protection worker also talked to Bartashevitch, who said he'd been involved in a physical confrontation with his wife and daughter. He said the gun wasn't loaded and he'd checked the chamber before he pointed it at them.

Police executed a search warrant at Bartashevitch's home and found 9mm ammunition and two receipts documenting sale of two rifles. One receipt was for Bill's Gun Shop for Jan. 22, and police learned that Bartashevitch sold an AK-47-style rifle to the shop for $150. The other receipt was for Frontiersman Sport Inc. for Jan. 22, and police confirmed Bartashevitch sold a newer AK-47 clone rifle for $375.

Bartashevitch was in court Friday, and bail was set at $20,000.

When my kids were in school, I never thought to "encourage" them to improve their grades by pointing a gun at them.

Guess I was a "bad" parent.

Indeed. 'Spare the bullet and spoil the child'. Parents are too soft these days. I'll swear that some parents don't even know how to use chainsaws properly on their children.

This person is not in the majority of gun owners, of course that wont stop people from claiming he is, what this constitutes is child abuse and the guy should be in jail

I guess the funniest thing about it is that he was mad that she had gotten 2 B's on her report card instead of coming home with straight A's.
I got news for him. He should have pointed the gun at his wife because NO WAY is he the daddy of that kid.

If you want to call something that happens to less than one person per million per year "not uncommon" I'd love to see your definition of 'truly rare'. [8|]

Well let see, 250 million is the US population so that is about 250 people, rare to me is finding ducks teeth. Just how many children have to die before you call it normal? By the way consider this:

The most recent statistical data available on child homicide rates,
Murray said, indicated that the U.S. had the highest infant-child
homicide rate — four times as high — as all other Western nations
surveyed, at 4.1 children per 100,000 people.

Did you read your own article?
"Firearms least of factors, says new research"
"A new statistical analysis report shows that despite a child-homicide rate in the United States which surpasses that of most other Western nations, firearms are near the bottom of the list of causes for the alarming statistics."

1. The US population is approximately 330 Million, not 250. (You'd think that someone who CLAIMS all these advanced degrees and supposedly aced statistics would know that.)

2. We're talking about parent involved homicides, not general juvenile homicides.
According to your article, "the killing of a child under 18 by their parent, or between 250 and 300 of the country's killings each year."

That is less than 1/Million population/year

3. Duck's teeth are nonexistent, not rare [8|] .

Desdemmonna -> RE: How to properly use a firearm (1/28/2013 1:51:17 PM)

Improper firearms stora, education and awareness parenting is at the root of many accidents. As a pare/guardian/etc the firearms collection takes secondary place, period. Even if there are none allowed in your home the odds a friend of he child/ teen WILL is high.
Golden Rules:
STOP!
Don't touch.
Leave the room.
Tell an adult.

As for parental units using a firearm irresponsibly to threaten a child, it is a privelage as a right via 2A, if you cannot show sound judgement to operate a firearm responsibly and rationally some hard thinking needs to be done indeed.
