Surely there are several Friday Night Magic Leagues at stores around Baltimore. I'd give each of those a try.

I don't play Magic but yeah, that's correct. I would almost all the comic book stores around here have Magic meetings. I think the library has a group as well and there's some that get together at Barnes and Nobles at the Harbor.

The best place you will find a group in Baltimore is in Hampden at Atomic Books.

It's a bit of a hike from Maryland, but if you drive a few hours West you'll end up in Roanoke, Va. In Roanoke you will find Star City Games.

From what I understand it is THE MtG Mecca on the East Coast.

Now, MtG isn't my thing ( I have a philosophical issue with collectable card games*) but if that's your game, that's the place to play and meet people to play with back home.

Better still: Mysticon is in Roanoke. It's held at the end of this month. There will be gaming galore and I have it on good authority that the Fifth Doctor will be there. A lot of people from Md. show up.

When you sit down at a gaming table, everything should be equal.

The dice should be fair, the cards should not be marked. It's your skill and luck vs. the other players skill and luck.

Collectable card games break that very basic tenet of gaming. You can just go out and buy a winning hand.

There is one exception: INWO. That's only an exception because there are OBD (one big deck) rules. MtG doesn't have that.

If MtG had that option, I'd say, "OK'" This has nothing to do with WoTC absolutely ruining Dungeons and Dragons. That's a rant for another time and you need to make sure you have a comfortable chair, a good stiff drink and a whole lot of time before you start reading it.

Yes, I'm 40 years old and I still play D&D. FUCK YOU! I can do what I want! Don't you judge me!

I'll only address your first point because I don't
know those acronyms.

If it's a gambling game I agree it should be equal,
Magic isn't gambling though, so much of the game
is based on developing a personalised deck and
play style, weighing specialisation against
generalisation, ect.

If everyone had the same deck in magic, wouldn't
it be boring as hell?

Mal, I am 45 and still considered myself a player. My daughter is a player...I like to think I raised her right.
