silvercuffs -> Induced/Forced Lactation (6/20/2006 4:03:05 PM)

I have a question about induced lacation in older women. Does it matter how long it has been since lactation last took place and is it possible to lactate with just a pump and the herbs...without the drugs and hormones. And if this possible....How many times a day do you have to pump and for how long. I was pumping every 2 hours for 20 to 30 minutes on each side(double pumping, waking up at night to pump)) I have a Medela Pump in Style. Is a hospital grade pump better for this than the regular pumps? I have been trying for 2 months now with out any success. Some breast swelling and clear fluids...no milk yet. I breastfed so I should be able to do this. I want this so badly for my Daddy.....Any advice is welcome....

I have found information about induced lactation on the Internet and could dig up some of that later if you.  In the meantime, you may wish to email a woman on this website called MissTITTYmilk, who is very informative.

I've done it using the newman-goldfarb protocol however that protocol uses medications. Generally a high dose birth control pill followed by Domperidone, and tons of pumping. Fenugreek helps, so does blessed thistle. http://www.asklenore.info/breastfeeding/induced_lactation/biology.html

has some really good info. Hope that helps :)

I found this page that seems a bit informative. You can always google it too..

 You should try the "mothering.com" boards, for info...don't mention what you want to induce for...maybe mention an adopted child etc, but theres ALOT of great info there for inducing...Eating Oatmeal for breakfast every day wiull also help, along with blessed thistle, and fenugreek. Sometimes, even in women who have breastfed before, it just doesn't work. Try not to feel too badly if it doesn't.

You're getting colostrum, which is a good first sign.  (Colostrum is clear or yellowish pre-milk.)  Sometimes lactating any more than just colostrum is impossible, especially around or past menopause.  I don't know a good way to force lactation unless you take hormones to supplement.  Even in forced lactation you have to give your body the idea that it's pregnant and I'd say that herbs and breastpumping won't usually be enough.

well the down side for me is that i am pregnant now i don't have any colostrum, unlike my previous pregnancies, i have 4 kids.  Because my last child i breastfed before getting pregnant with this one, these 2 will be la year a part, i have nothing in my breasts. They are full and heavy but there is nothing coming out, a year ago last year i was squirting my Master with colostrum,and now nothing, it has been a disappointment for my Master who likes to manually milk my breast during play.

At this stage, 17 weeks i can't take herbs or medicine for breast milk, i will just have to wait until it comes in after the baby.

i am not sure if it is possible if you are past menopause though...
