AthenaSurrenders -> side effects with a drug you've taken before without issue? (2/14/2013 3:16:48 AM)

Is it possible to develop side effects to a drug you've taken before without any problems?

I have been having bouts of nausea and dizziness, coming and going (but generally at least once a day) for the past few months. I am not pregnant. I'm otherwise fit and well. The only thing that has changed recently is I re-started the birth control pill after stopping breastfeeding. But before baby, I was on this pill for at least five years without a single problem - in fact, it was great because it made my periods much easier.

Is it possible/likely that something has changed and it no longer suits me? Have any of you been through similar? It feels just like early pregnancy which is what makes me think it's hormones.

Trying to narrow things down before I speak to my doctor. I feel like I'm wasting his time over something so trivial.

You can suddenly develop side effects to any medication, but in this case it's more likely due to the fact you body's hormonal balance could have been altered permanently through pregnancy.

Go talk to your MD about possibly swapping meds. Legitimate concerns are not a waste of time. If you are still hesitant about scheduling an appointment, call his office- most places have a nurse that you can speak to, and can offer some advice. (Hint: it's probably, "why don't you come in on Tuesday.)

Just as each pill affects you (and everyone else) differently, taking a pill again after being off it for any amount of time may yield different results/side effects. I've had it happen twice. I was on the patch and decided to try out the ring. Didn't like it so I went back to the patch and it was awful. It happened again when I was on Yaz. I went off it for some reason, and when I went back on I had different side effects. Things like pregnancy affect that as well, but not always, as I've never been pregnant. Just go in to your doctor and ask for a new pill, it's not a waste of anyone's time if it just doesn't work for you anymore.

After I had my daughter, my entire body chemistry changed. I could no longer eat certain foods, the simplest of meds that I took before either didn't work anymore or worked too well or made me ill, I could no longer look at anything that spins or goes fast without it making me nauseous.

So yeah, it's possible. Having a child can alter your entire system.

Okie dokie then, guess I'm changing. What a pain in the bum, it's so hard to find something that suits you.

LW it's funny you mention the food thing, I'm still unable to eat some of the things I went off when I was pregnant and I can still not tolerate strong chemical smells like perfumes.

Off topic, but the food thing and pregnancy....I only recently have been able to eat shrimp cocktail (made me sick while pregnant), still can't even smell Chinese sweet and sour anything (for the same reason), and when I was pregnant, I craved yogurt like you wouldn't believe (hated it before). I will still eat it (after all it comes in Lemon Meringue flavor!), but it is more because I try to use it to count down on sweets.

ugh. Yeah, strong smells get to me and make me nauseous. I will go the whole way around in a store just so I don't have to get close to the perfume counters. I can't go into candle shops and while I love scented candles, I can only use the more light scented ones. The strong ones just make me feel sick. Never had that problem before I was pregnant.

I used to drink my coffee black but then last year I started on new meds for my depression and now I can't stomach it. I have to have it with creamer and a little bit of sugar. Black coffee now just kills my stomach.

It's weird, huh?

Don't worry, I used to be able to take a wide range of antibiotics when I was younger and then I had Lizard. 2 years later, I had to take a class of antibiotics and on the second dosage broke out in a rash. Bo had to scratch me while I was on the phone with the pharmacist. Went back to the doctor the next day and now I am allergic to the entire PCN class.

Same thing with some pain killers and nausea meds. Nothing like having the itches while being sick in the ER and demanding that they put me on something else.

The "filler" in medications can be radically different between manufacturers. And, sometimes, a manufacturer will change the blend on their filler material.

In myself, I can't take the "Tylenol" brand of acetaminophen (paracetamol for those on the other side of the pond) without getting diarrhea. But, I can take the generic brands from several of the chain pharmacies with no problems.
