I'll be visiting US for a couple of weeks in April and plan an East Coast - West Coast trip. I always had this fantasy of doing this trip and visit people I met on this site... sort of a couchsurfing experience with an SM theme. Its NOT about having sex... its about meeting a certain type of interesting people.

Do you think its possible?

Do you think its safe?

Possible, yes.
Though not for everyone.
Safe, not entirely.
Though probably more so than a lot of people would suggest.

Are you looking to do this with people you've only recently met or to stay with people you've known for some time?
I've met three people from this website in total and every experience has been safe and positive.
But I have known all of these people for at least a month or so before meeting.

Do you already have people in mind? Because if not, I'm going to say it's not possible. February to April doesn't give you very long to find people in the right areas and get to know them well enough that they would trust you to stay in their homes.

I know some for a couple of years now... but never met them in person.

Problem is, the itinerary is not that flexible, so there will be hotels or new people on it aswell.

The more I think about it, the less uncomfortable it gets... maybe its better to stick to going out for a beer.

Could I do it? Probably. Then again, you have to remember just how many of these people that I've known over the years and when I say know, I mean I've already met them face to face.

Would you want to do it? It would completely depend on how much faith you have in folks that you've only met via the internet.

I would say meeting kinsters you met on the net is possible. Play even possible. Kinking your way across the country staying & playing with random people like some S&M youth hostle...highly unlikely!

I once tried to hitchhike across the country ... got one ride ... went about 100 miles ... then I was stuck.

This isn't an epic bad idea but unless you have the flexibility to walk, hotel or fly home from random utah when it doesn't go the way you expected I would suggest motel 6 & hertz rent a car as a more realistic option

Yes a certain amount of caution should be used.

Though I have had the good fortune to meet several people from this site over the past several years, during my travels through the US. It also must be stated that many of these people had gotten to know me somewhat from posting on here for a length of time and via IM before we wanted to meet in person. I have made some real good freinds and the online friendship we established translated easy to face to face meeting and had the honor of being invited to stay in their homes for a few days in subsequent visits.

For a big guy, getting old helps when it comes to hitch-hiking. I've had to do a lot of it in the last couple of years and found I get a lot more rides then I did when I was younger. Of course, by the time they reach my age, the vast majority of criminals are either reformed, dead or in prison for life.

Couch surfing: staying overnight at the residence of a stranger, usually someone on the net

There's a formal couchsurfing.org organization now, but the activity goes back quite a few years before that. On one side, it's a place to sleep for free. On the other side, it's a way to meet different, and possibly interesting, people.

There are some surfers who specialize in people of like interests; presumably daany was wondering about that.

I think it's an excellent idea, as long as you're staying away from craigslist ad's, lol.

I'd certainly entertain visitors, if I had the room for that, I've taken in strays from time to time, and didn't get killed in spite of everybody around me cringing, I believe I exercised reasonable caution without getting all rubber room about it.

It's kinda: "is the internet bringing us together or pushing us apart"?

Used to be pretty common, my HS girlfriend was a army brat and they had people dropping in from all over the world all the time, of course those were mostly people they had met before. My sister usually has an exchange student, and while they haven't all turned out to be model citizens, I think it's mostly been more drama than trauma.

In fact we discussed this a bit at Christmas, I believe the traditional European standard for guest privileges was a fortnight, but opinions here differ, "guests and fish both start to stink after Three days" was one standard put forward.

I dunno, things are a bit topsy turvey these days with some peoples living situations, so I'd probably give you a week, after which time you best start chopping wood.

I think it would be fun if you knew these people a long time but in today's environment I think it could be a bit dangerous. It's not like it used to be. When I was a teenager, I did it all the time. Times were different. Unfortunately it's just not the same anymore. I wish it was. Since the AirBNB incident, I'd be really wary of staying in the homes of strangers.

Maybe meet them for a coffee or drink first? Take a few hours to get to know them and then go from there? But have a backup plan just in case it doesn't work out. You don't want to be stuck in the middle of nowhere with nowhere to stay.
