Bradley Manning pleads guilty to misusing classified data in WikiLeaks case
(Reuters) - The U.S. Army private accused of providing diplomatic cables and other secret documents to the WikiLeaks website pleaded guilty on Thursday to misusing classified material, but denied the most serious charge in the case, aiding the enemy.

How exactly does a lowly private get access to all these so called "classified" docs, etc? I mean, seriously, if they are that secret and that important to national security, blah, blah, blah, then why was the barn door left wide open like that? Which makes me think they really werent so secret or important as the govt has tried to claim.. But then the govt has been known to fabricate shite when it suits them (like the "proof" of wmd so they could invade Iraq)..

I sorta find it funny that no one else was the least bit interested in all the info he had..

Oh they probably were.

This fucking government can't seem to keep its computers' pants up. The accused so-called "hacker" who got into NASA's servers waltzed right in because the shit-for-brains admins had never changed the default Administrator password.

Our tax dollars at work.

Institutional idiocy. It would be funny if it wasn't hurting us.

Powergamz1 -> RE: treason? (2/28/2013 5:05:54 PM)

On the first part, if the classified material reveals higher ups commiting atrocities, or treason, then the oath taken requires defending the Constitution against those domestic enemies, no matter who or how powerful... not something a mixed up kid is likely to be capable of deciding, much less carrying out.

On the second, that should apply to anyone and everyone held in custody.

On the third, that is quite correct. Walker, et al.

It is not for a mixed up kid to decide to betray his oath and deliver classified docs to anyone. I don't care what his reasoning is.

I also don't agree with keeping him in inhumane conditions as has been alleged.

When I was in the Army, punishment for leaking Classified info was at least 30 years in jail and $35,000 (IIRC).

By the way if anyone is interested here is one of the videos Manning released, As a Veteran I found it very disturbing. The helicopter crew states it being fired on but the video has no one on the ground, they are all behind a building, no flashes, no AK 47s or RPG, and that is only one incident.

My opinion is that this was treason, and should have been charged as such.

I agree.

He`s just damm lucky that no deaths/injuries or security breaches leading to deaths/injories happened b/c of him or that could be connected to him.

If there had been,he`d be getting life.

Not a whisle blower, not a hero either.....there was nothing he released that was`nt already known or that was rlivant.

So how did he commit treason if everything he released was already known and wasn't relevant? [8|]

Then what was the reason for the treason? If all that shit was either already known or irrelevant, what's treasonous about it?

"Manning admitted sending hundreds of thousands of Iraq and Afghanistan battlefield reports, State Department diplomatic cables, other classified records and two battlefield video clips to WikiLeaks in 2009 and 2010. WikiLeaks posted some of the material, embarrassing the U.S. and its allies.

He said he was disturbed by the conduct of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and the way American troops treated the populace. He said he did not believe the release of the information would harm the U.S."

That`s a bunch of shit.

The guy did a massive document drop with more info than he could have comprehend. Our enemies are able to sift, decipher and sort through that info/intel..... comparing it with their`s/other enemy`s,etc. to our detriment.

With the right analysts, our troops, their positions, methods and tactics can very well be exposed.

All the "abuses" he claimed to have wanted to expose were pretty much all in the news already.

And Jesus.......giving him a metal is what bin-laden would do.....[X(]

There is plenty of public information about our mistreatment of civilian in Iraq, then there is Afghanistan

http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2013/feb/24/suicide-bombers-target-afghan-security-forces/

And if the abuses are already public knowledge, why is he being charged for treason?

Treason has a very specific meaning and this does not reach that level.

The very specific meaning of treason is aiding and abetting or giving aid and comfort to the enemy. Anyone who doesn't believe what Pvt Manning did rises to the level of treason is themselves guilty of treason.

wow.....I don't know where to begin.
The only comfort I can take from this is where, and with whom,it originates .
Treason can now be defined as not agreeing with racist Jim [8|]

Then I am guilty of treason. I cannot see that giving the American people information about the was is aiding and abetting the enemy. I think people are entitled to know what is going on, it is the first need in a democratic society.

Manning is only a hero because the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq were so poorly planned and executed that they did massive damage to the U.S on multiple fronts. Would he still have been a hero if he had turned over similar amounts of documentation during Desert Storm? Not likely. That's just my $0.02.

Would he have wanted to turn over info about Desert Storm? Only if there had been massive war crimes there as well. Was there??

So help me God.

What has Bradly Manning been accused of that violates his oath?

Revealing war crimes is not an offense. It is supporting and defending the Constitution of the United States. Even if the President orders otherwise. The Constitution does not empower those who oppose it.

quote:

Amendment 14 SECTION 3.

No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any state, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any state legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any state, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof. But Congress may by a vote of two-thirds of each House, remove such disability.

It is not for a mixed up kid to decide to betray his oath and deliver classified docs to anyone. I don't care what his reasoning is.

That was settled at Nuremberg. Lower ranks who know that crimes are being committed and keep on following orders are as complicit as those who give the orders.

Not being a US soldier, I don't know what the oath in question says. Does it involve things like upholding the Constitution, or does it simply say "I swear to obey my superior officers without question"? Because if the former, he may well have felt he was upholding his oath.

In my army training, I was told I following an order that is unlawful is a crime under the UCMJ. I asked the instructer what if I am told to put civilians in a pit and shoot them. The instructer stated it is military policy that you obey all order give to you. If you think it is unlawful, obey and afterwards report it.
