. . . And don't ignore the bleedin' obvious. Me, for instance, I realised after *years* of bad dreams that I was overheating myself with too many bedclothes. That, and going to bed with a troubled belly - easily cured with a hot milky drink.

I have night tares from time to time. I’ve put holes in walls striking at things in my dreams. I woke up half the wing of a small hotel one night screaming bloody murder and swearing. I also talk walk swim and do other things in my sleep all while still in the bed. I also get a lot of bad dreams. My stress levels can play a large part. My night tares are more PTSD but not always. If I have been in a deep sleep and entered into one of the higher levels of sleep I will not recall much from the dream other than bits and pieces and or just that it was a nightmare. Nightmares that happen in lower levels of sleep like when I nap are easier to recall I remember a lot more. This is true for most people. If you are able to recall must of your bad dream it is likely you are not going through a complete sleep cycle at night. This could be for a number of reasons. You may have sleep apnea or some other problem. If you don’t recall much of your dream then it could be more of a mental problem or chemical imbalance. The common treatment for this is antidepressants. Antidepressants have helped my sleep problems some. Another thing I thought of is it could be a medication you are taking. I hope this helps.

Hello Op

Please everyone check to see if anyone of you may have Sleep Apnea!
I had written another post, about my own night terrors, mine were from childhood
and they were from my father and other abuse!

But then I found out I had the sleep disorder!
When I do not have enough prescribe air pressure, I have the worst nightmare with my eyes open
I see things and I will fall asleep "anywhere" I was given a shot for pain at 10 am I woke up at 2 pm
and I did not know where I was, it was truly frightening! I could had crashed I was told, and I do not drive!

So please have a sleep study done as soon as possible, I have it very bad and I no longer work do to my inability to stay away!!!
I see things and I fall asleep with my eyes open and well it is just not good accidents as falling can happen!

I hope you can find out what is wrong oh yes sleeping pills do not help!!

Best Regards
Mons

OP, while I've never had issues with my nightmares (I actually kind of enjoy waking with an adrenaline rush), my GF suffered from them for years. She went to a therapist, was checked for SA, and was referred to a sleep therapist who suggested this: Lucid Dreaming.

This was before she met me, and she explained it was rooted in her dealing with a hard-core stalker. She says it helped her get over it.

Do you use any medication that might affect your physiology?

Also, have your physician check out your thyroid and have him look for Graves' disease.

You haven't said if you're presently diagnosed with something, and/or are on any medication or street drug. Including marijuana. Since anything you take could be causing this.

Hard to explain but...if you have ADHD or similar disorder it can impact how much information "hits" your brain. I once described it as the difference between a window screen with normal sized openings vs a screen with holes the size of quarters...everything you see and hear in a day hits your subconscious...normal people's brains discard the useless information.. At night, all that information is still being processed. Kind of like some people have speedy metabolisms that digest food more quickly than other people

MissBlue, I do not personally have experience with this subject, so I am not sure if I can help. Perhaps consider this prayer, several times a night, before you go down:

I am protected from all harm, seen and unseen.
If the nightmares are mine, give me the insight and wisdom to understand their meaning, use them to my benefit, then release them from me forever.
If they are not mine and belong to others, I command them to return, now and forever, to those from whom they came.

People are empathic, some more than others. It is possible to pick up on other's negativities; stress, pain, fear, suffering, nightmares, etc., just as easily as picking up on, and enjoying, their joy, happiness, playfulness, etc. It just might be helpful to evict those that don't belong.

Just a thought.

OP,
Night terrors have muliple causes from medications to sleep disorders to stress to eating before bedtime. So working with a good doctor is really key.

If your night terrors are repeating (same basic nightmare) then there is a technique used to address this. My experience with the technique called "dress rehersal" in which you go over what you would do if that nightmare really happened to you while you are awake. People have the ability to actually shape their dreams. Even repeating nightmares. Something to talk about with your doctor or specialist.

Herbal helps can be things you associate with relaxation. Incense or lavendar just before bed had helped many. Good luck in getting to your root cause.
