Gimp is a derogatory term for someone with a handicap. Put a mask on someone, and you've handicapped them temporarily of sight, hearing, maybe speech depending on the mask.

It's because the guy who made the photo editing program GIMP also pioneered the idea of catsuits + restrictive masks together.
