http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn23240-the-father-of-all-men-is-340000-years-old.html

"Albert Perry carried a secret in his DNA: a Y chromosome so distinctive that it reveals new information about the origin of our species. It shows that the last common male ancestor down the paternal line of our species is over twice as old as we thought."

Interesting stuff!

I agree. What I find even more interesting is that every time I read something like this it's always that our beginning has been pushed backwards. I think that says some telling things about our self-image.

I am unclear here, is the root reset farther down the line, or is it bifuricated, it is really unclear in the article.

But yeah, cool beans.

I think they're offering both of those explanations. Either the root of it all goes back further, or there were modern and archaic humans existing at the same time who interbred.

Hmm, I've never thought about that; there isn't a law that states man developed evenly though, so...

A collaborative study involving researchers at Arizona State University, the University of Toronto, and the University of Cape Town found that human ancestors were making stone-tipped weapons 500,000 years ago at the South African archaeological site of Kathu Pan 1 -- 200,000 years earlier than previously thought.

It has long been believed that modern humans emerged from the continent of Africa 200,000 years ago. Now Tel Aviv University archaeologists have uncovered evidence that Homo sapiens roamed the land now called Israel as early as 400,000 years ago -- the earliest evidence for the existence of modern humans anywhere in the world...

According to researchers, the discoveries made in the Qesem Cave may overturn the theory that modern humans originated on the continent of Africa. In recent years, archaeological evidence and human skeletons found in Spain and China also undermined this proposition, but the Qesem Cave findings because of their early age is an unprecedented discovery.

Indeedily. :) I think the article also references some fossil finds that helped support that idea - fossils of people that showed both modern and archaic features mixed in. Those fossils were found close to the place in Cameroon where they believe this man's unique Y chromosome originated.

So it's very possible that that is what happened.
