Feline, t you will probably need to start shopping at a health food store,  there are not many processed foods that are healthy for you, even if they have a healthy sounding name or presentation, most include  either  high levels of fat, sugar ( hi fructose corn syrup etc) or salt, for breakfast you can buy just plain oatmeal, and add dried fruites  such as raisons cranberries  etc to make it interesting, or buy  just plain  flakes or puffs without the sugar.soy or rice milk makes a healthy substitute for cows (yuk) milk, if you get  organic ,grain  fed, free range chicken eggs ,they are not as high in cholesterol.hope this helps   . joe

i have been told for years by many experts that eat what you want untill noon(large breakfast to get the furnace going) mid-morning snack, lunch, mid afternoon snack, dinner and perhaps a snack later but dont eat 3hrs before bed....and take garlic tabs or linseed oil for the cholesterol....your body needs the sugar and fat carbs but moderately.....after a large breakfast than lessen your lunch and dinner but enuf to keep the fire going ...eat 5/6 times aday.skipping meals only makes your body go into self preservation mode and will store the fats/carbs for later....which in turn adds the weight...garlic/linseed/flaxseed, will cut down the cholesteral in your body and is alot cheaper than getting a prescription with the same benefits...

Avoid sugar moreso than fat that's already in foods. Your body needs some fat.
Eat food as close to the way it looks in nature as possible.
It might take some time for your tastebuds to adjust if you are used to processed foods and a lot of hidden sugar, but once you have adjusted I think you will find your food much more satisfying if you eat more natural foods.
You can purchase wholesome, natural foods at your regular grocery store. Some people may find natural food stores prohibitively expensive. Just stick to minimally processed foods when shopping at a "regular" store.
Consider planting a vegetable garden :-). Eat raw foods.
Most people who have cholesterol issues have issues with the amount of cholesterol their body makes, not the amount they eat. If your body makes too much cholesterol, then you might benefit from avoiding eggs. If you can find a local farmer who raises chickens for their eggs, you might be amazed at how much better they taste than the factory-farmed ones you buy at the store. (As we speak, we are waiting for our lovely birds to begin to lay :-) )

The processed junk they sell in boxes and label "diet food" is toxic IMHO.

Go on Amazon and look for a book called "Eat to Live" by Dr. Joel Fuhrman.  You will lose weight fast, the recipes are in there and you will feel better than you ever have.  He explains how it all works in detail.  He believes in a vegan diet with few empty carbs.  It sounds tough but if you do the very strict 6 weeks then to the more moderate you will find that your body knows what is good for it.  Things you used to eat will virtually make you sick.  Not only that but you find you don't desire them either.

There is a yahoo group for it, just put the book name in there.

I didn't find out until I was diagnosed with prediabetes how much sugar there is in almost everything. Fruit juices are loaded with sugar. Ice cream OMG is loaded with sugar, my fav food, wahhhh

Not the ice cream I make. It's made fresh from cream, fruit (from my garden if possible, organic of not) and stevia. Provided you're not going into ketosis, most berries (which is what I use) aren't too carby.

The only restriction is I minimise the dairy I eat, so if I have any dairy in another meal I can't have ice cream for dessert at dinner (makes me feel turgid).

I have to agree.. I mean.. I wish I could do it again.. I am trying..but can't seem to.  I was vegan for several months.. and things I thought I couldn't live without.. I quit craving.. I was the healthiest I have ever been in my life.

I am getting into the mindset.. as I have noticed I am leaning on food again.  If you eat that way.. you don't really have any choice but to eat healthy...but like anything else..there are prepared foods and such..and they are horrid for you.

Fresh fruits and veggies...those are why I love this time of year.  It makes me being vegan or vegetarian such an easy option.

As your tastes change.. you will be surprised what is good..things you wouldn't dream of liking .. you will.  Grilled veggies..and even pineapple.. to me..they can beat a fatty burger any day.. never thought that would happen.

I applaud you, Feline, for bothering to inquire. I myself am the worl'd worst long-term dieter. To this day, I still go on "fasting" weeks, have weeks where I just drink Slim-fast, or the Celebrity diet juice you can buy at Walgreens' that is like a juice fast, etc. - it's stupid and is no doubt screwing with my health sometimes.
You go, girl!

while Eggs may be high in cholesterol adding a sprinkling of garlic powder will go a long way to killing the cholesterol .... oatmeal is a very good source of nutrion ... if you care to contact me I can give you more tips on a good and proper diet .. the carbs you really need to concern yourself with are white carbs . they are raw and do not breakdown and synthesise the same as other carbs ..... fats can be ok as long as they are not Saturated or trans fats ..... salt is dangerous depending on how much is used and worse for women as it cause water retention. I was considering adding diet Dom to my repetoire but that might insight flaming . lol

as I stated if you care to .. please feel free to contact me on the other side

Fruit has tons of sugar in it naturally. now it's not man made so it's better for you than  man made sugars, and it's the pulp in fruit. Fruit sugar is not absorbed strait away it has to be digested:)

Suan I have learned that juice was bad for me so I get the kind that's made withs plenda and has on fructose or corn syroup. I still eat sometimes only twice a day but I have lost 13 pounds  in the last 6 months.

Yesterday My dog and I went for a walk and I even jogged the last lil bit of road home.

I have always liked veggies especially carrots, and I love sugar pea's and snap pea's and we used to eat  pea pods right off the vine in our garden:D
