The server actually hasn't been down at all, but there have been significant connectivity issues for some users. The issues, however, are unrelated to browser or OS; the connection failure occurs before the browser even gets around to trying to identify itself. As a result, there is no benefit to switching your browser – it will have no effect, coincidental observations otherwise notwithstanding. The problem has been that the server was intermittently unreachable from some networks. I'd guess the issue was caused by some bad routing information getting propagated.

Because the problem only affects certain routes to the server, switching to a different network for your internet connection may work. For instance, connecting via your cellular network with a smartphone might work while connecting with your home Wi-Fi from the same phone might not, or vice versa. Using a proxy may also allow you to route the connection to the server via a path that does work.

Collarchat apparently does not run regular site-monitoring checks, so they were unaware of the issue. If you happen to experience similar connectivity problems in the future, you should probably let support know so they can work with their host to get things fixed. Checking with a site like downforeveryoneorjustme.com that MalcolmNathaniel mentioned (or perhaps the slightly easier to type isup.me) before filing a report would be helpful to verify that the issue is not, in fact, just you.

LOL

Did you really just tell a forum full of CollarChat users that we don't complain enough???? [:D]

shallowdeep -> RE: How often do the forums go down? (3/13/2013 3:52:36 AM)

People already complain around here? You must be joking, right? :)

But, more seriously, in my experience, support has usually been reasonably responsive to, and appreciative of, polite, well-documented reports of technical issues. And this is one case where simply being informed of the problem from multiple sources probably would have helped to diagnose it earlier. Because the server itself was working, and because they thought they had dealt with the problem already, they apparently weren't aware it had cropped up again. Hopefully it really is resolved this time. I guess time will tell.

I blame the house cats. It is part of the Obama/alien domestic cat plan to take over the world.

ChatteParfaitt -> RE: How often do the forums go down? (3/13/2013 4:43:20 AM)

Collar chat is down much too often; this weekend I couldn't get in from sat night until at some point on mon. BTW: whenever this happens, the profile side is up and running, and which makes me assume it's the profile side with all the ads that matter to the owner. No ads on this side, no income being generated, who cares if this side goes down?

It's part of what's made me much less invested in checking in with this forum.

And, just to make it clear, I support the domestic cat plan to take over the world (my two made me say that.)

Thanks for that Shallowdeep.

Somebody should get on the roof and wiggle the antennas.

I have had problems too but rarely for a minute or two..what I do is go to Google on Chrome and just type in "collar chat"...then I try all the options to get in and one usually works.

VideoAdminAlpha -> RE: How often do the forums go down? (3/13/2013 6:57:17 PM)

Shallowdeep and MalcomNathaniel explained it better than I ever could have( I tend more to administrative matters, the superb tech team here actually is what keeps the site running). I believe if I remember correctly there were 2-3 reports of collarchat being down the whole weekend and Monday. One of them was a staff member made personally to me, but when we got their cookies cleared everything connected properly so I didnt piece it together to even notify the tech team. The last time, as said, as soon as as they were aware of it, they were in contact with our host and the problem was solved. This time however, they were not aware to be able to take steps to correct the problem.

Respectfully, the statement that the owners do not care whether this side stays up or not because there are no ads could not be more inaccurate or untrue. The areas of Collarchat, IRC chat, and VideoChat do not garner any income from advertisements and yet are the ones most likely to develop tech problems should any occur. If ownership didn't care about this side, they would not have added it to the site ( it was added after the profile side) and would not have it available now. As I said in the other post, please contact Support about any issues you ever have that are technical that you feel may be affecting more than just you. Please bookmark those two sites the gentlemen gave, they may come in handy at other times with other sites also. If the problem is us, the owners WANT to know, I want to know...I personally like it better when everyone is here; otherwise, it may just be users that may not be fond of cats, and I would hate to send my 10 out huntin ya...[;)]

Badgermajik -> RE: How often do the forums go down? (3/15/2013 7:55:24 AM)

I'm using Safari on OS X, latest versions on a Late 2011 MacBook Pro w/16GB RAM etc. Connection is rock-solid, other than every couple of weeks when I think the ISP cycles our IP and all the wireless devices drop. Then I restart the damn thing and it's good for another couple of weeks. I always use the link from collarme.com to reach the forums.

"Bear in mind that I have no idea what OS/DB/Webserver is being used here, nor do I know what hardware it is running on. These are just guesses as to why it goes down."

If you are curious, and on a pc, http://www.grc.com/id/idserve.htm

I'm not booting to 7 just to run it.
