Anti-convulsants are the appropriate medication for bipolar type II. The easiest way to describe it is that it is a problem with the electrical wiring in the brain just as seizure disorders are. And that's why the same meds work for both disorders.

Lithium and depakote are first tried in Type I's but they don't work for Type II's.

The second thing you add to the anticonvulsants are the atypical antipsychotics.

Almost all mood altering meds have a chance of making things worse. The well known paradoxical effect.

Tell her to call the doctor and ask how he came to this diagnosis and why the hell didn't he tell her what the diagnosis was.
Personally I'd suggest a new psychiatrist. One who explains this stuff because she needs to educate herself stat.

But she needs to understand that Type II's don't manifest typical type I symptoms. You may never get the wild swings between depression and mania. Many Type II's don't have mania or hypomania. It's why they get misdiagnosed for a long time.

I was given a drug for my stomach problems. I also have sleeping problems. I've yet to have any sleeping pills help me....but amazingly the stomach drug puts me out like a light. I mentioned this to the doctor and she said if it works for the sleep too then just take it when you need to sleep and it will help your stomach also. So that's what I do.

Hey, that's gotta be one for Huey Lewis, lw! Would you pm, or post here what is was?

Re: off-label uses: one of the weirdest ones I've seen was Zantac, a stomach acid reducer. It was prescribed to S for his skin allergy. Didn't work for a damn, though.

I can see how Zantac would be prescribed for that. Some skin conditions like mine, a genetic form of eczema, is linked to allergies and some stomach problems are also linked with it...basically it's all one big connection.

As for the stomach med I'm on it's called dicyclomine. It's a muscle spasm relaxant. I constantly have stomach spasms which make me feel like I'm going to vomit all day long so I take these to relieve it. I was supposed to take them 4 times a day but I could not stay awake at all. So I told my doc who put me on a different type but said I could take these in the evening to help with my sleep since they knock me out cold and I don't get a headache or anything in the morning. I do however, get some of the side effects from the meds which is another reason I try to limit my intake but when I really need to sleep they sure as hell help. I'll put up with the effects for a good night's sleep lol.

Next to Ambien which I used to take, it's now my second most favorite med.

Just an update. my friend met with her therapist today... her therapist doesn't agree with the diagnosis. She said she suggested PTSD, depression, and mild anxiety. Also told her to be sure to go over the diagnosis with the doctor at her follow up next week. suggested not taking the meds until she understood the diagnosis and that this doc seems to like prescribing Neurontin for a variety of mental disorders.

new research project... looking to compare and contrast the symptoms of bi polar levels and PTSD/depression/anxiety to see what we come up with.

breagha, wow. Now I will definitely be interested in what the psychiatrist has to say. He could very well have prescribed drugs without doing a thorough history. Scary

Unfortunately the symptoms of bipolar and those of depression and anxiety can be exactly the same.

The thing you first have to know about mood disorders is nobody gets just one. So suffering from depression and anxiety could be what she has. Or she could well have mixed states bipolar, depression and then not depressed but not manic. Or depression and anger. With anxiety as well.

If she's tried SSRIs for the depression and they don't help, or worse cause hypomania, that would be a sign to me that she does have bipolar. It's very underdiagnosed which may be why this doctor is being accused of having a fondness for the anti-convulsants, not because he's prescribing them recklessly but because may be accurately diagnosing this where most doctors aren't able to.
