400 Meters for Snipers lol no, no, no that is barely long range hunting. .308 Nato (7.62 Nato) can be used up to 800 meters and was done well outside that in Iraq. Then against .300 Win Mag, .30-06, and .336 Lapua, no 400 Meters is not sniping especially when a Romanian PSL (not a Dargunov) which is not a sniper rifle can do do four inches and tighter at 600 meters through a scope with the right handloads. The Springfiled 1903A3 makes chump change out of 400 meters and look at http://www.mosinnagant.net/finland/simohayha.asp that used a Finish Mosin Nagant rifle (a remanufactured captured Soviet receiver) out to five hundred meters over iron sights. There are guys who use cowboy era rifles to shoot at targets a mile away, this is not a sniper shoot. When you start doing eight hundred meters then call it a sniper test, till then it's just rifle shooting.

Unfortunately a rep from Illinois put a ban on the registering of new machine guns back in 1986, why, no one really knows other than it was a way to spit on the 2nd Amendment so it's a game of getting what's left or now getting bump fire stocks for your rifles which in my opinion cause too much gun movement to allow for good accuracy while trying to duplicate full auto fire.

as far as automatics go, there are 3 I would like to own.

A browning 30 cal machine gun, in the WW2 marine stinger version. (That is a 30 cal with a BAR stock on it, making it a shoulder fired weapon.)

A Ma Deuce 50 cal

And a nice mini gun.

Shit, did that look like a good time!

I bet there was a massive amount of gun homicides there though. Everyone knows it's the amount of guns that causes the problems. [8D]

You can always go to Knob Creek, KY. They have a shoot like that two times a year. I've even read some real artillery shows up. [:D]

God damn, that M134 costs around 2500 a minute to shoot. Maybe 1200 if you reload your own............but fun fun fun.

Could be a lot more, depends on what it's set for. M134 has an adjustable rate of fire, 2000-6000 rounds per minute. 7.62mm Nato is going for about $0.85 per round. So up to $5100 a minute. But like you said Fun!

Can you fire one of those things from the shoulder whatever sort of stock they put on it?

mnottertail -> RE: Now, THIS is a gun show... (3/28/2013 9:48:36 AM)

Those big BARs (they were a 308, or a 7.62 in the day) you would have to be a big fucking boy to heft it and shoulder fire, but it has been done.

From Wiki -

The primary variant of the BAR series was the M1918, chambered for the .30-06 Springfield rifle cartridge and designed by John Browning in 1917 for the U.S. Expeditionary Corps in Europe as a replacement for the French-made Chauchat and M1909 Benet-Mercie machine guns. (emphasis added)

IIRC, the BAR was handled by a two man team. They're heavy and can be shoulder fired. Steve McQueen used one in The Sand Pebbles.

I'd love to fire one someday.[8D]

edit: Oh, yeah. I remember reading how the one chosen for carrying and operating the BAR was normally one of the smaller guys in the squad. Don't know why I remember that, just do.

mnottertail -> RE: Now, THIS is a gun show... (3/28/2013 10:39:21 AM)

Yeah, 30-06  a faster slightly longer 308, I forgot about that. 16 pound gun it was.

Hey Moon

I'd say that depends entirely on how big you are. On an episode of the reality show "Sons of Guns", they put a shoulder stock on a Browning 1919 for a VERY large man. He certainly didn't seem to have any trouble with it, but then he looked to be about 6'8" or so. Then again, I'm a fairly small guy, 5'9" and was only about 120 when I was in the Army and carried a SAW. I know that can be shoulder-fired fairly easily.

During WW2, the Marines in the pacific theater of operations had problems establishing suppressive fire on Japanese pillboxes and mg nests.

An enterprising gunny on Guadalcanal took the stock from a BAR and with a bit of work, adapted it and a new trigger to a 1919 30 cal. This eliminated the need for a tripod.

after that, a team of three could easily suppress the fire from a pill box or mg nest and take them out with satchel charges. If it was a really big Marine, then they only needed two men, one with the stinger and one to hit the strongpoint.

Right, that's me told, then.
Thanks, folks.

What an appropriately named place!

TricklessMagic -> RE: Now, THIS is a gun show... (3/28/2013 2:54:21 PM)

If I am going with machine guns of world war two I want the MG34. It was superior in many ways to the Colt MG variant in .30-06. An MG42 while superior is to squad based for my tastes, and the BAR while inventive in World War I was easily outclassed by the BREN by World War II. Now granted I want an M1 "Grease Gun" because I've actually shot one alongside a Thompson 1927 and it was far more pleasurable to shoot in my opinion. Then I'd go with a select fire Mauser C96 variant in 9mm with the snail drum and shoulder stock. Probably toss in an Owen gun or two like was being made in Melbourne Australia by criminals after that big gun ban of theirs went into effect just to cover the 9mm side of things. Oh throw on an IDF production UZI while you're at it. And a select fire H&K G3. Yup that's I'm done unless I could somehow legally make my own person MGs under law (get rid of that Anti-American shit rag of an MG registry ban) then I'd use the PPSH43 kits as a starting point and work something up for myself.

I'd also like to turn out a Chauchat in 7.62x39 for its steam punk appearance (the MG actually worked well when made from quality materials and fired in 8mm Lebel and the Belgian rifle round which I cannot remember for the life of me, .30-06 and British .303 was too much for the gun). Then I'd tackle an Owen gun and go after a MP40 design (not MP38).
