I saw that story. Looked at the ugly women who took offense, and thought WTF?!

I'm thinking that this is political correctness run amuck. Do I really live in a world where people may no longer compliment one another? I know, he's a man in a powerful position, but he isn't sleeping with, hiring or firing her. Apparently, he also noticed her as an attractive female human being. She is very attractive, and it does not take anything away from the fact the she is also brilliant. End of story, for me. M

Do you think they would have been as offended if he had complimented them?

You know that if he says I think all women are beautiful, he's going to be called a scoundrel who objectifies all females.
Yah can't win, lol. M

That's what makes it eligible for being called "sexist".

I voted no. It wasn't as if he had said, "In spite of being attractive, she's actually a good attorney, to boot!"

I think it's lame to call anyone who considered it sexist to be ugly and jealous.

In the same way that disagreeing with the Ku Klux Klan is 'racist'... blaaaah, blaaaah, blaaaah. Riiiight.

Do you seriously expect people to fall for these these StormFront sophomoric games? I wouldn't recommend holding your breath.

BTW, here's the *un* edited definition - American Heritage® Dictionary
Discrimination based on gender, especially discrimination against women. Attitudes, conditions, or behaviors that promote stereotyping of social roles based on gender.

Attitudes, conditions, or behaviors that promote stereotyping of social roles based on gender.

Support for calling the comment "sexist" relies on the second one, obviously, which is why that's the one I quoted, albeit from a different dictionary which also offers both definitions.

A number of dictionaries don't, however, and personally, at least, I think the definition based on discrimination is preferable, because even though current usage has made its way into several dictionaries, the result is to make "sexism" so broad a category as to be all but meaningless except to people looking for a club with which to hit someone over the head.

Nevertheless, that's what we're stuck with.

So now you're going for a Nazi smear? If you think this kind of crap is going to enhance your reputation, I wouldn't recommend holding your breath.

So only conservatives can be taken to task? I see nothing wrong with pointing out boneheaded comments by a member of any political party. If I were him I would admit my mistake...take the heat...tell my supporters I was wrong and not to defend me then move on.

Certainly anyone should be taken to task for blunders and mistakes. But, should this remark warrant anyone being taken to task?

Exactly. It was a Toastmaster device... 'Not only is Dr. Smith one of the world's leading experts on phrazulliary toptection, but he's a great dance partner for his wife of 35 years...'.

Despite the all-pervasive presence of gender-based bias, you must look at an instance individually and in context, to make what can only be a judgment call, as to whether what a person says or does is biased.

Fortunately for the President, this remark was preceded by other similar, un-newsworthy remarks made in public, at political events, toward male politicians. It was the light-hearted touch of humor at the end of his serious testament to this public official's admirable qualifications for her office. And the remark was couched in the public knowledge that the two are long-time friends, so that the informality of such a joke is friendly and permissible.

I don't feel it was sexist, and I don't believe that Attorney General Harris thought it was sexist, either. However, once the issue has been raised, the cries of sexism put her in an awkward position. How can she too casually dismiss accusations of sexism, in this case, without seeming to take this very real issue for women too lightly? Therefore, when reports have remarked that she has not publicly accepted the apology, I feel sure that this last consideration is all that prevented her from summarily dismissing the suggestion that his remark was sexist.

On Meet the Press, someone characterized these remarks of the President's, such as "this good-lookin' guy over here," referring to another politician, as awkward. Why? How is it not charming for a powerful public figure to inject a little gentle humor, breaking up the formality and putting someone at ease? It's not like he's being lascivious about it. I think it's socially gracious.

Exactly. I would defend Clint Eastwood, or John McCain for doing the same thing.

Now, if someone says it, and starts licking their lips and moaning, sure we should object.

I don't think it was wrong to say, really. It wasn't necessary, but I don't believe it was out of line considering the friendship between the two. It was a brief moment of levity, which, I believe, needs to happen more often.

I chalk that up to hypersensitivity. People on the lookout for anything that can be used against someone else, regardless of whether or not it carries any meaning.

There are many who are offended every time Obama breathes. It seems to be their job.
