There goes one of the most principled, consistent and courageous politicians I've ever watched.

Mad as a sack of cats as well, wrong about pretty much everything, and responsible for creating the economy we have to live with today, mind you.

What was the tenor around here with Sen. Kennedy passed in 2010? Were all the conservative folks dancing gleefully (I wasn't here, so I really don't know)?

Many of them were, including one neocon who's trying to take the moral high ground about insulting a corpse above.

That's pathetic. They were just as wrong then as those doing it now.

MsGypsey -> RE: Margaret Thatcher Dead (4/8/2013 8:54:29 AM)

This lady's not for burning.

slimmistress5CON -> RE: Margaret Thatcher Dead (4/8/2013 8:55:41 AM)

Let's hope they hermetically seal the coffin ... after-all, we wouldn't want any surrounding soil to be contaminated!

Another attitude would be that doing the mealy mouth about a politician you loathed when they were alive just because they've croaked is spineless copping out.

its a shame all the harm her and her cronies did, cant be undone.

Word.
I saw a very nice post on another board where the poster stated that he saw nothing to celebrate until the values she's left lurking at the core of British politics to poison every government since have been done away with. He's definitely on to something there.

WantsOfTheFlesh -> RE: Margaret Thatcher Dead (4/8/2013 9:06:15 AM)

FR,

Ya'all are pathetic. Regardless of her politics, it's just not nice to throw dirt on her grave.

Yes. And it was nasty

tha uk was ina massive crisis in tha 70s. her medicine was tough but she fixed a country being destroyed by unions. that was to tha benefit of most & her success was so great labor became unelectable. not for nuthing she was elected thrice.

When Margaret Thatcher was asked what she had changed about British politics, she answered: "Everything." It was uncharacteristically immodest of her, but it was true. After she became prime minister in May 1979, she changed the atmosphere of the pre-emptive cringe that successive ministries of both parties and industrial management had exhibited towards the trade unions ever since the World War Two.

She changed the sense of embarrassment that Britons felt towards the concepts of productivity and profit. She changed British reliance on manufacturing industry just in time, inaugurating the services and information technology industry revolutions…

She changed the ownership structure of vast industries, exchanging the nebulous concept of 'national' ownership for the more efficient, purer (and ultimately fairer) one of shareholder ownership. She changed the way we financed the European budget.

Lucylastic -> RE: Margaret Thatcher Dead (4/8/2013 9:54:59 AM)

Wrong...you can put all the sources out there you want.....at least the unions didnt offshore the money they got every week, the country never recovered.....notlike the useless twats that spawned yuppies and the money market management explosion, and they are still fucking things up today. and why the poverty levels are so high now.

I think someone accidentally spilled some water over her.

Her last words were, reportedly, "I am melting... I am melting"

Ah, so it WAS true that her sister was squashed by a house.

Explains a lot.

I think the commitment to unilateral nuclear disarmament in the Labour manifesto might have had something to do with that. Plus the conveniently timed intervention in the Falklands.

Politesub53 -> RE: Margaret Thatcher Dead (4/8/2013 10:54:50 AM)

WantsOfTheFlesh is spot on. I am guessing many of those posting here dont even remember what it was like in the UK prior to Thatcher. She did what needed doing to curb out of control far left unions who were intent on wrecking the country.

Eveyone forgets New Labour, under Blair and Brown, privatised more jobs than Thatcher.

Lucylastic -> RE: Margaret Thatcher Dead (4/8/2013 11:05:10 AM)

youknow I love ya PS but yeah I do remember only too well what it was like before her...theres a reason I hated the bitch, actually many many reasons.
the fact that dickheads after her added to the clusterfuck is par for the course... look at Reagan...then what followed...and is still following

Yep, I agree. It's Thatcherism that could really do with dying. It'd be good for Britain to have a society that values society again.

I get the point and feeling behind those who say 'Never speak ill of the [recently] dead' . . . but, at the same time, I'm revolted by the idea of a widespread 'respectful silence' by her many enemies, leaving her disciples to spin her death into something that "unites the 'whole country' in mourning".

This can't be denied.

She solved the, very real, problem of the excessive power of the unions by destroying our manufacturing base - I'd have to say that as a "fix" this one is debatable.

Nope, not for nothing. She had the Argentinians to thank for one of her victories, and privatisation for the others.

You know, "privatisation" where the government sells us stuff we already owned as a nation.
