The principal concern with background checks relates to how information will be handled, and it's not just a "gun nut" issue. From a previous post:

Information collected for one purpose shouldn’t be used for another purpose....” But Calabrese says that Reid’s legislation fails to include those "privacy best practices... it doesn’t have any of the protections that we have in current law for existing licensees...” Reid’s legislation is hauntingly vague about who would physically keep information about American gun purchases, but it’s crystal clear that records will be kept.

Exactly, which makes folks like the ACLU "gun nutters"??? seriously? Or are they in the conspiracy theorist camp?

The bottom line is that if you don't trust the government then you don't really trust anything they want to do or any controls they want to place on anything. That's pretty much where I'm at... hence why I don't own a gun but don't support the recent rash of gun control legislation. And honestly, I would be utterly floored at anyone who DOES trust the government? That would imply they haven't read a newspaper in at least 40 years or more... at least.
