While I agree that a referendum about the Euro would have been a disaster for Kohl, it was never even remotely an option. We have a representative democracy, not a direct one, and there are no provisions for referendums on the country level. If that is good or bad is up for debate, though. Kohl wanted the Euro as his legacy, and he was willing to do nearly everything to make his mark in history and see his vision accomplished. He should have been contend to have been the chancellor to preside over the German re-unification, but he had to share the limelight on that, which noticeably rankled him. However, in relatively new polls there is an overwhelming majority that wants to keep the Euro, those who want to go back to D-Mark are a minority. It is interesting though, that this is just now making the news in the US, as it happened last year. The theft of 5 tons of Nutella in Germany however, was reported on your side of the pond on the very same day. [:D]
