As I understand it, many people have been giving up their landlines because their cell phone plans are cheaper and they see no reason for the redundancy. Hey, whatever they want to do is just fine by me.

I have also noticed that there are fewer and fewer pay phone.

This has got me to wondering if the new houses and apartments being built are built with phone jacks?

Does anyone know?

If they are, how long do you think that it will be until that changes?

And also. . . when are all these computer programs going to stop using a floppy disc as the "Save" icon? We do not even USE floppy discs anymore.

Here in baltimore when I tour new condos being built, if you decide to buy one then phone jacks are one of those things you request just like you would when you are choosing your kitchen cupboards, tiling, etc...

Era: now that I think about it, my apartment doesn't have phone jacks either. I've lived here two years and the former tenant lived here two years so I'd say this place never had any to begin with .

There is 802.11s

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEEE_802.11s

Basically, it extends the capability of modems so they can talk to each other. One asks another, "Hey, do you know Joe?" The other says, "No, but I know someone who does" The first says, "Give this to him and tell him to give it to Joe." The other says, "OK".

Upshot : One modem wired to the net can serve several that are not, and they can pass it on, at a reduced bandwidth, several hops away. Mix this with IP Telephones and you don't need wires anymore. Except for power. And you can bury the powerlines. Even under a river. I've seen 'em do it. So, in five or six generations, they will be gone. Faster than that, in the rich neighborhoods.

Won't that be GrrrrrRATE!?!?

What do you mean, you never noticed the wires where the trees are supposed to be?

Most residential multifamily units are today (in larger cities) being built with broadband only.

Wherein which you can obtain phone and other services via same.

(Most homes are being built similarly).

We have a home phone through Straight Talk with unlimited US calling, caller id, voice mail, etc. for $15/month but it doesn't go through phone jacks. It plugs in and the signal comes from cell phone towers.
