The Japanese have a similar reservedness about emotion, do they not?

That is typical of Japanese and Chinese. It is not identical with Northern European reservedness.
Northern Europeans, at least in the West, which has been Christianized for longer than the East, are cool or cold and civilized. Japanese and Chinese on the other hand are warrior cultures that have been indoctrinated to deal with their violent natures by hiding their emotions in order to not give an offense that might provoke a violent reaction by another.

Confiscate their Marilyn Manson CDs?

This is a perfect example of why they lose it: people don't give a fuck about 'em.

Come on, you can't look at these boards for more than two seconds without seeing an example of *exactly* what happens to these kids every day of their lives to make them decide that they just don't give a fuck about you anymore.

So, you judge our entire national culture based on comments made by maybe 40 or 50 contributors to these Boards. Thanks for your insight. Did you work for Gallup during the last national election?

So that's some nice snark but he never claimed to have based his position on collarchat ergo strawman.

He's pointing out the existence of ageism and claiming that it has consequences.

My bolds.

Never move to the USA, Aswad. They'd have you in a lunatic asylum within weeks.

To be fair, I didn't see Bishop implying that the USA had a culture, Vincent. Even if he did, I don't accept that it's an entirely unacceptable position for him to take.

If that is so and I missed it, I owe him an apology, which I happily give.

That seemed to be the main topic of this thread, peon. Culture and young crazies. My bad.

Though I don't know enough about the prevalence of random violence in Japan to know if they add data to the equation that would support or invalidate Aswad's argument.

Compare Tohoku and Kobe with Katrina, particularly the aftermaths.

Or look at the historical, where there are recorded instances of huge numbers of people voluntarily starving to death without social disturbance during times of famine, so as to ensure better chances of survival for the rest. Literally, people forgoing their rations by the thousands until they die, for the benefit of their communities, as opposed to civilians and police looting, raping and so forth.

The point about random vs purposeful bears repeating. I'll take meaningful violence over random, meaningless violence any day.

And, yes, as FTP pointed out, they've a record of being fairly brutal, but not so much for random violence.

IWYW,
— Aswad.
