That's the actual beginning inscription on the monument. Notice, if you will, that the phrase, "who brought you out of Egypt" has been omitted. So, which "God" is being defined?

Do you honestly doubt for a minute that "God" here refers to the Judeo-Christian deity?

Does Islam recognize the OT? Even though they see it as having been tainted by Man (thus the Q'uran being the "pure" Word), the differences between the OT and the Islamic writing is almost negligent (the largest part difference outside of language translation being the specifying of Allah, instead of the word, "God").

Yeah DesideriScuri beat me to it, the Egypt part is edited out but that still doesn't make God the same as god.

Does the Jewish set of 10 Commandments contain a definition of who God is, other than "God?" Nope.

Sure it does, God has become the name of your particular god to the point that quite a few Jewish people won't even write it out hence the whole G-d thing.

Perhaps that somersault is a bit much for you to see, but there is a huge difference.

Allah is quite equivalent just in Arabic:

quote:

ORIGINAL: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allah
Allah (English pronunciation: /ˈælə/ or /ˈɑːlə/; Arabic: الله‎ Allāh, IPA: [ʔalˤˈlˤɑːh] ( listen) is the Arabic word for God (literally 'the God', as the initial "Al-" is the definite article).[1][2][3] It is used mainly by Muslims to refer to God in Islam,[4] Arab Christians, and often, albeit not exclusively, by Bahá'ís, Arabic-speakers, Indonesian, Malaysian and Maltese Christians, and Mizrahi Jews.[5][6][7]

Any theories as to why it was edited out?

Anyone else wonder if the phrase, which rooted the Commandments in the israelites' experience and gave the basis for Yahweh's claim on their obedience, was cut to make the decalogue more acceptable to a general audience?

I can't speak to his thought process.
