I love being outdoors and working in my yard and I am sure that I have some across poison ivy before and never had any reaction to it. Well it seem i found some poison oak and had quite a reaction to it. I got it all cleared up but have been left with two areas that look like burn scars. My question is does anyone know of any home remedies that will help the scaring go away? The areas still get real itchy if I am out in the sun or get sweaty. I need to finsh clean the hedge area but was hoping this would be ALL cleared up before I may possibly get into more.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions or remedies.

Off the top of my head, quick like a bunny, I personally would use graphite salve, and/or calendula cream. Will let you know if I think of others.

onion juice takes a long time, but it does work alot.

do you have jewelweed in your area?  use it to prevent the stuff in the first place.

Ottertail, to my knowledge, jewelweed is treatment, not a preventative for poison ivy/oak/sumac, and has no effect on reducing scars. It is a most wonderful plant for what it does.

Oinions and vinger seem to be cure all to a few things. I did not know about the oinions I will give that a try. Ron we have jewelweed but it has not started to grow yet. I did think of that but I started cutting the hedge row well there was still snow thinking I would avoid any posions stuff. The joke was on me.

If you spread jewelweed juice on you it does act as a prophylactic.   But it is a cure.

Not for scars, onion juice by example reduces scarring.

What I understand is if you believe you've already made contact w/poison ivy, etc, and you are lucky enough to IMMEDIATELY slather the area w/jewelweed juice, you may have a chance of nipping it in the bud, so in that regard, it is kind of like a preventative. Doesn't work all the time, or for everyone, and truth be told, I've never known anyone for whom that's actually worked, have you? I know there have been conflicting studies on its efficacy in that regard in the past. As far as I know, it's not like one can paint it on before one has urushiol contact and expect it to be a true preventative.

Have you personal experience with it MN? How about other plants?

My son works as a landscaper and is also VERY sensitive to the stuff. Last time he blew up enough to end up in the ER. Of course, he is also allergic to bee stings and refuses to carry an epi pen.

I was lucky I only got it on my arm...but my arm was three times larger for over a week. Did your son end up with any scaring where it was LL? If so did it go away on its own?

I don't know. I wonder whether a sensitive person can be desensitized w/very small exposures, similar to what is done w/folks highly allergic to bee stings.

There is a homeopathic remedy made from poison ivy, Rhus toxicodendron, useful for trauma, stiffness, strains, sprains and other things, and it is also the antidote for urushiol poisoning. Perhaps a classical homeopath could advise as to whether it can be used in some way to desensitize the urushiol sensitive.

I just thought of something, if the scar is not too old, the homeopathic remedy Graphites may work well.

Actually kar, he is a 19 year old male, he kind of has scars everywhere from various stupid things, lol.

I will say this though...it seems to me that what you believe is a scar is more likely that the poison oak hasn't quite cleared completely up. Take some benedryl or other antihistamine for the burning/itching and figure you still have spreadable poison oak on your arm.

I can't get him to go to the doctor to get a new script for an epi pen (and of course carry the damn thing), so going to a homeopath is even less likely. I might be able to get him to go to some shop of that type though. Suggestions for search terms to find one?

ETA: to give you a better idea of what a stubborn pain in the ass he is....he inherited his father's Irish pale skin. He has a buzz cut (more like stubble shaved actually) and his ears...well, they stick out a bit, lol. Anyway, his ears burn horribly every year to the point of blistering. The rest of him will burn as well, but not as bad. Even knowing that all he has to do is quickly sweep some sunblock over his ears, he refuses to do it.

I've honestly begun to believe that he thinks subjecting himself to these horribly things makes him more "manly." Guess I should be grateful that he at least listens about drinking lots of water to stay hydrated being out in the sun/heat all day.

This is not a Home Remedy but it is a great preventative. I have used it for a long time with great success

Most health food stores carry R. toxicodendron, usually in the 6, 12 or 30 potency. You could do online research on how to dose and know when to stop or contineu w/homeopathic remedies, and give it a try if you like. Be advised, one must watch for improvements or aggravations very carefully and continue or discontinue as indicated. Get educated on it before trying.

They should also carry calendula cream, as well.

Now I remember. I've used Resinol ointment for all itchy reactions and have found it to be very effective. Haven't tried it on urushiol poisoning, so I cannot speak to its efficacy there. One can usually get it from pharmacies.

LMAO LL ......hum my son is 29 and just as stubborn.....nothing like his mother who is as stubborn is as the day is long [:D]. They do not like to listen at that age and think skin cancer can't happpen to them. You could be very right about it not being a scar but just the posion oak...[:@] After a month of dealing with it I am just so ready for it to be just gone.
