I've known and worked with a lot of cops. Most of them are good people. A few are assholes, so much like the general population.

A very large number of them have relationship problems and get divorced. Unfortunately it's a lifestyle that isn't very family friendly. Long shifts, weird hours, frequent unplanned overtime (because when you've got a prisoner or are caught at a crime scene you can't just clock out), and canceled vacation time make it hard to make plans or to find time to socialize. They can sometimes be moved to a different station or department which is much further from home or has worse hours, and they have little or no choice in the matter. Then, add to that the high-stress nature of the work - the risk of injury, the aggression they face, the things they see (suicides, sudden deaths, murders, domestic abuse, rape cases - this stuff takes a tremendous toll even on those people who can build up a tough shell), the pressure they are under to meet certain targets, the negative view some people have of the police, the frustration at the court system... all in all, cops can carry a lot of issues and some people handle that better than others. I wouldn't say 'stay away from cops' but rather like getting involved with someone in the military, or a celebrity, or someone who is a carer, there are certain problems and challenges you can expect to face and for some people they can destroy the relationship.

Something to think about if you've got your heart set on a police officer.

Also, a lot of police officers don't like being treated as a cardboard cutout, which is what you do when you decide you want to date someone BECAUSE they are a police officer. Nobody likes to be defined by only one of their traits.

I agree with everything you said except the bolded part. I'm not sure where you are originally from, but outside of the cities and the state police in the US, most towns only have one "precinct" (usually referred to by the public as the "police department" and they worked for the town, so they won't be switched to a different location. Corrections officers may be transferable, but that would depend on the state. For example, in NJ, corrections officers are hired by the county, not the state.

I'm in the UK. Policing here is divided into forces, of different sizes. They wouldn't be moved huge distances like military folks but even to the other side of the city can add an hour each way to the commute and some of the policing areas are pretty big in less populated areas. They can also go from a cushy 8-4 post to working shifts with little notice. Not huge things, but certainly little things that can add up to unsettled times.

It always seems men have worse encounters with LEOs. All the ones I met or dated were nice guys. Now I have not dated one since before I became interested in BDSM but the couple I did date...I would not call them Dom types. In fact, maybe it was the stress of the job but off-duty they were really passive! Firefighters tend to be MUCH better personality wise! If you are looking for vanilla LEOs to date there are a LOT on OK Cupid and POF (in fact...so many I was leery of the divorce rate for them). I get a lot of emails and interest because I have always clearly stated that I only am interested in extremely clean cut men-in fact I think my old profile on here said "if you have ever been taken for military or police...you are exactly my type" Trust me....they will come to you! The one thing is that, like other professions with "groupies" the LEOs who like the attention & use it to their advantage are usually the ones you DO NOT want. Many departments prohibit flirting, engaging..whatever you want to call it...of women they encounter while on duty so the ones that follow the rules try NOT to respond to offers, suggestions, phone numbers...

I thought that might be the case, and I agree that can really suck. Where I am, they mostly work swing shifts, so they will do a certain amount of weeks on one shift, then have 4-5 days off, then switch to another and do the same thing. I believe ones with years of seniority (our officers tend to stay with the department from early in their career to retirement) can choose their shift, and some of them actually choose the later shifts.

But like I said, for those in areas where this can happen, it definitely can be another stressor.

Wow, thank you Tiemeinknottss- that was a really great post! You're right, I'm looking for a "good guy" rather than one who is way into groupies :)

Chasing men by their profession is no better than chasing women chosen on their profession. It doesn't get women hot to be objectified (unless that's their specific kink), and it's no better to objectify men.

When i was still a construction smith, guys were quite interested. I'd never date anyone treating me like a shell and vessel for their fantasy.

I met a guy from Homeland on a vanilla site and started inquiring about kinkiness by flirty talk about his handcuffs.

I don't flirt with guys on the job often, but when I do, there's no objection.
