Jean Stapleton, an actress whose portrayal of a slow-witted, big-hearted and submissive — up to a point — housewife on the groundbreaking series “All in the Family” made her, along with Mary Tyler Moore and Bea Arthur, one of the foremost women in television comedy in the 1970s, died Friday at her home in New York City. She was 90.

...normally the death of someone in the entertainment industry doesn't faze me, but this one does. I'm genuinely sad the world is now without her.

I agree, Kaliko. She was a favorite of mine. A wonderful woman and an amazing actress. Aside from the amazing laughs she brought us, she had a warmth about her that's hard to match.

Rest In Peace, dear Jean.

Funny lady. All in the Family was the one show we would sit down and watch as a family.

90 is a hell of a good run.

"All In The Family" was an amazing show and she was a tremendous actress. Stapleton was nothing like Edith Bunker but she made the character human and believable. I still enjoy it today even though I've seen most of the episodes a half dozen times each. May she rest in peace.

I told her I had a terminal disease and the dingbat just went ahead to get me a beer. She's a good li'l' submissive.

R.I.P., Ms. Stapleton

I agree. She was even more hysterical in some of her other work.

A theater and musical comedy professional who went on to become an
icon because of television.  She was well respected by those in the business
in both venues.

Remember how often when the writers of All In The Family needed
something very warm and human they would turn to her to be the
balance to Carroll O'Connor's bombast.

There really is only one proper way to describe her.  She was a "class act".
