More or less, but yes I would say at least 80 percent of modern Tarot decks are based in some way of the Raider White deck. I have seen a few which are not though. This is why I think getting a RW deck and working with it to understand it is important to become a good Tarot reader for even if one do not like that deck, it is a key to so many others.

Yes I agree, the post important part is if the reader his or herself manage to tune into the deck for reading the Tarot is a very intuitive practice.

I miss this thread!

Did a celtic cross yesterday asking about a relationship. For cards 1 and 2, got 5 swords reversed and 10 cups crossing. Card 3 basis was 6 wands. I used the Haindl deck which includes its own meaning of the card on the face, so I am including pictures. Any opinions on these 3 cards together would be welcome (honestly, mostly for fun to keep the thread alive!).

Card #3 basis was 6 wands here. So by the deck's names of the cards, they were Defeat, Success, and Victory, in that order. WTF?!

What a lovely surprise to see the Tarot Forum resurrected!

Thanks for your four cards, I've just come in from work, but, I'll see what I can do.

Although, conventional wisdom states that 5 Swords is a card of defeat, & oft times it is, its meaning can be redefined by the cards around it. As the 10 cups represents a deep & sustained, lasting love or friendship that has had a lot of work put into it, & stands on a firm foundation, & the fruits are being enjoyed by the lovers. It would seem that a lot of struggle, negotiation of obstacles, & opposition of others, has been overcome to reach this point.

The 6 Wands not only means victory, it also means the support, appreciation & love of your friends & others around you, so the relationship is widely approved of. The 3 Cups is a card of celebration, the lovers or friends, can spend a while enjoying their togetherness, as with all 3s, it's a springboard to bigger & better things, celebrate now, but realise relationships need continuous maintenance, or they become stale, continue the journey, while making the relationship more solid & stronger.

I may have mixed tenses a little, I'm a bit tired [:)], but, this is a great set of cards drawn for whoever is in the relationship. It has been built on strong foundations, through difficulty & adversity, it has the support of your friends, & the promise of a wonderful journey ahead, for the two lovers/friends [:)]!

With humble apologies for my overlong absence I return to the forum!

I have a suggestion! I am going to the Bay Area Tarot Symposium! I would love to meet any or all of you there. I highly recommend this event. Many of the authors I have recommended are present and lecturing on a variety of topics.

http://dodivination.com/ - the Daughters of Divination, the brain child of Thalassa of San Jose, this event featured some cool people and always deepens my understanding of the craft of seeing. (Thalassa is like learning Tarot from a genius version of a female Groucho so she might not call this a brain child but pick another organ, maybe the spleen bastard... i digress.)

Message me here for any questions you may have about the event. It's usually a vanilla event, but when you get a building full of witches, magicians, and seers, it's hard to keep the atmosphere "normal." Hot & Cold running Salon always available in the bar I'm told.

I was working on a person's cards last night. She was a woman reaching retirement age, she claimed she was done with her career, finished with corporate America, no children or grandchildren, looking to travel for a year and see some things and then come home. And then plans to commit suicide. She asked me what i think of that plan.

My benediction for sitting to read is this : I am a Seer; I see that Past, the Present, and the Future; bring me your questions. I am not afraid. I was glad I reminded myself I'm not afraid because I was suddenly afraid of what may happen based on my next words.

She explained she is a Buddhist, she believes she will come back and continue her work toward enlightenment, which she is convinced she will not achieve in this life. I sensed she was asking for me to ratify her decision.

In the end I refused to ratify or deny the decision. Her life is hers and we all have to decide to live every day. Some of us go straight to coffee after deciding to wake - I do. I didn't always. These days I do.

The cards (Yes we used the Tarot of the Pirates, a wild deck that shows rather alternative views of the cards.) I am hard pressed to recall every card in our conversation, but I had in the seven of swords, a view of seven memorial lights over seven graves, a sense she will do this anyway. I reminded her - aside of all the cards - that even in the Buddhist notion of coming back, that the same work, maybe even more, will be at hand when she returns. And the same work will be there - as to speak, where ever you go, there you are. Same stuff - same day.

I also suggested that what I know from friends that have experiences menopause, suicidal feelings can come from imbalances and problems that can be corrected and a joy for life reachieved. She insisted this was not going to happen.

We were left at an impasse. I have left myself a split mind - I really believe that a person has the right to life or an end of life. I know there are collateral issues i have problems with. 1) leaving a horror mess behind for a survivor to clean up 2) abandoning children to an uncertain fate 3) enacting hate and spite against survivors through your death 4) cravenly dodging your responsibilities - these are ethical flags for me when people mention suicide - but even then it's not my hand to save or condemn.

I plan on revisiting her. I am setting up a strategy to chat with her. I would like to hear discussion and suggestions on strategy. Thank you for your consideration.

I wondered 2 things when I read your post and question. Why did she consult with you in the first place, is she unsure of her decision? Why would she want ratification or opposition?

FOREHEAD SLAP! Wow, that's a great point. Even one I made in my discussion that evening, that when a person sits before you, they are quietly confessing they don't have all the answers and need your help.

UPDATE: She is currently planning some world travel and in the planning I hear reports that she is far more engaged with the world. I received a thank you note and she was thrilled someone actually affirmed her right to live.

I was consulting with a local expert in acupuncture and he suggested that if she is experiencing a kidney imbalance, she might not enjoy living all that much, and this is something very treatable and sadly common and overlooked in pre/mid-menopausal women.

This whole experience has brought me looking deeply into female menopause and the train wreck of symptoms that go ignored.

Bigsqueezer, she sounds pretty unstable. Not only for her original reason for consulting with you, but because it sounds like she is hanging her very continued existence on the opinions of someone else (you). Again, just a first impression, for your sake I would be careful. She could be some trouble for you. Sorry if I am being overly paranoid.

@spiritedsub - agreed! Calling backup on this one. She's taken advice of my acupuncturist and myself and seeing a psychologist this week. week.

There is a good moment here to mention in the world of using Tarot as a counseling tool, remember where your job ends. I am not emergency staff, I am not a stock broker, I am not an estate planner, I am not a lawyer - I have no business handing out advice in those areas. What crossed the line for me was this: moving from talking to planning.

I still maintain that we all have the right to end our lives. Personally I will not rot in a hospital incurring millions in bills and eliminating my whole estate so there's nothing left to my next of kin - I will end my life before the parasitic US medical industry gets to take everything. BUT THAT'S JUST MY OPINION. I don't get to make it hers. I think she needs to talk to someone that works in this arena before making this choice.

I definitely share your position on our right to choose how our lives end. Such a fine line sometimes between people seeking help and people seeking attention or sloughing off personal responsibility. But I am going to remember this story when menopause comes along if I start to have strange thoughts or feelings. I'll take myself straight to an acupuncturist :)

When you change the deck you use, does the change of cards alter their meanings for you? If so, how do you determine what interpretations to give the cards of each deck? If not, why do you use more than one deck? Does the choice of deck change the answers you get?

The feelings you get from the pictures (and the pictures surrounding them) will change with the deck and with the query/querent) So, yes...the meanings *will* change with different decks, but not because of the LWBs.

I believe people use more than one deck for the same reason they have more than one painting in their home, or use more than one recipe when they cook...they feel drawn to different things at different times.
