Our pit kills rabbits, and "gifts" them to us. Then waits for praise.

And even though they wag their tail all happy looking when you praise them, they walk away saying to each other, "what the fuck is wrong with her? I feed her and she won't eat it!"

<before anyone comments, I'm joking. Although I'm sure the dogs have something to say about it for real.>

Probably for the same reason why cat's do it with mice ...
They are at least telling you they are doing a useful job.

Would she be offended by a polite thank you, but no thanks?

Very much so. You should take it and eat it immediately so you don't hurt her feelings.

To show you how they saved you from the threat and what good little hunters they are or perhaps they are sick of the food you are feeding them and are giving you a hint.

The reason they don't eat them, is that they haven't figured out where the dog (cat) food is!

Now that is an interesting thought. Every time your pet brings you a present, you cook it up and feed it to them. They will either stop bringing you the "gifts" or bring you more because they like the special food they get. It could save a lot on pet food!

I had a mole problem in my yard and didn't want to put out poisons. My male cats ignored the critters. Several times I almost broke an ankle and screeched and fussed and my cats came over to investigate the offending holes...soon afterward, dead moles started showing up on my porch or were dropped at my feet. (Smart cats, and they obviously love me.)

Raider, our Aussie Dog mix has been hunting the gophers that have been tearing up our yard and bringing them to us. We thank him and toss the gopher out.

In the wild a dog will bring "gifts" to the pack leader to show the leader their subservience to the leader, to show they know their place. Your dog is doing the same thing with you since you are now the "leader of the pack". You should be glad of this. She knows her place.
