It might be a stupid question but are there classes that I can go to and watch bdsm in action? Not that I want to just be a pervert and watch, but I want to learn. I'm new to this but would like to see how things play out typically. I don't know if I'd learn anything from watching porn.

Books are good. Munches are better. But if you want to learn a specific skill, how to do it safely and enjoyably, there may be a class for it.

Your best bet, outside of "the Google", is to network and learn, learn, learn. There are plenty of resources out your way.

There are BDSM clubs, search on google near major cities where you live

A lot of clubs have demonstrations, check out ones in your area

I went to some at TES in NYC back in the day.

There are quite a few regional week-end gatherings.

www.ThunderInTheMountains.com

Not sure of web-site, but it's in St.Louis.... Beat Me in St.Louis - get it?  a play on "Meet me in St.Louis, meet me at the Fair..."

Do your OWN research, please.

I just Googled

bdsm classes houston

and the number one hit was:

www.houston-eros.com

Clicking on that leads to their front page where we see:

Our aim from day one (October 1997) has always been to have fun and to encourage our friends to do likewise as we explore all sorts of interests relating to the mental and physical pursuits of BDSM through our weekly meetings/classes. Then applying that knowledge in real life play parties! (as opposed to purely online endeavors)

I agree about googling BDSM clubs in your area. On your profile it says you live in Houston, I would imagine there are a few in a city of that size.

I went to the BDSM clubs for a while where I used to live and found them very educational in types of BDSM play, both on techniques and safety issues. But, use your common sense. There are a lot of people who act like they know what they are doing but don't have a clue. I found that the ones who really knew their stuff were the last one's to toot their own horns.

Bottom line, if something doesn't feel right to you, follow your gut.

I don't know how it is elsewhere, but most of the BDSM clubs in the Southeast that I've been to require that you know someone and can basically be "recommended" before you're allowed to attend a play party. I don't know if the rules are the same for their instructional classes or not. Dungeons are very protective of their members' privacy, so my best advice is to go to a local munch and get to know the regulars there. Then you can perhaps get a known munch member to "verify" you so that you can get accepted as a dungeon club member. In lieu of that, contact the club to find out what their admittance policies are like for instructional classes.

I host a "Leather Nite" once a month at the local gay (and bi-sexual) bath-house.
If a man showed up and just asked questions and watched, now how would I know if he was gay, straight or purple?

One of the gay groups has demos at a bar monthly.  Questions to the guys running / demoing will lead you straight to BDSM groups. (See what I did there?  Straight to the straight groups....?)

Do your OWN research.  Gay men will help.....

Actually if you google Master Tainos you will find a whole school and kink based retreat. When I first started wanting to really learn, I wrote what I wanted to know. Then I found someone who knew that thing I want to know about. A lot of people are flattered you think highly enough of them to ask them for their expertise. (Choose your time carefully!)

You don't need a class and please DON't use porn as a teaching tool. That's incredibly wrong and most porn is FICTION. Most pizza guys don't get laid by the lady who suddenly has no money for pizza and Most girls will probably NEVER be as comfortable with EXTREMELY uncomfortable situations sexually speaking. You can't trust porn.

Learning bdsm off porn is like going to the pound to pick a name out for your kid. Its really just wrong.

You may be able to find some inspiration, however of kinks you may not be aware of. But talk to someone about HOW to do it. Porn has a crappy way of editing out a porn star learning to safely flog a pillow. Its not sexy to practice aiming a flog. Its sexy that she suddenly laid into a sub though, right?

I might as well ask what you mean by BDSM.

If you mean ways to safely bind someone, beat them, or otherwise reduce the risk of certain acts, there's tons of information out there. Any local community is probably happy to give you direction, since nothing good comes from you hurting someone while you experiment. If all else fails, there's always the internet.

If you mean how to do lifestyle stuff and be a dom, anyone who acts like there's a simple training regimen is peddling snake oil.

Sure, theres classes out there. Play parties for those new to this. That's how I first started out. As already suggested, try Fetlife. They have a lot a good list of local events in any given area.

I agree. We really need to know what the OP is interested in learning.

My local BDSM group offers plenty of seminars to teach techniques. Most of the BDSM groups that I've visited in other cities do as well. So there are plenty of opportunities to learn safe techniques. And if he's not comfortable going to classes, there are always books and videos.

One thing that the OP should be aware of is that you won't be able to learn some things at the BDSM club. For example, my local BDSM group doesn't allow fluid exchange during play parties and seminars. So if you want to learn how to pee on somebody, or about blood play, or if you're interested in watching people have sex, it's just not going to happen. You may see some of that at a private party, but most local groups won't condone those activities.

So what is it that you wish to learn about? If it's how to tie someone up, or proper wax play techniques, you'll probably find that at your local BDSM club. But if you want to learn how to do scat play, or how to force your slave girl to give you a proper blowjob, you may need to look elsewhere.

I have never taught in Houston but there is a lively scene there. Join fetlife and search for houston groups there.

Being new, here is some advice. Don't sweat being new, stupid chicks dig guys with flashy experience, real women dig guys with integrity. Don't seek out a mentor, in general guys have trouble finding good ones and it less a way to pass on knowledge and more a way to pass on semen. Anyone real will share kniwledge pretty freely. Volunteer to.help at events, that is the way to get a good reputation and meet people. Dress well, look sharp, most doms are fat slobswho dress like shit. Toys are great but dont make the dom, the ability to make a woman feel safe and cared for will take you much farther than a bag full if the coolest toys.

Edited due to the above post. Check out ALL the groups as styles and vibes can, vary greatly. My favorite dungeon in LA has no DMs, sex is common, fluids swallowed but is heavily male dom female sub. Play spaces in SF tend to vary widely, dykes doing fisting, porn stars pouting, newbies having hot real scenes not pouting, and everything in,betwen. Smaller groups often, have little play other, than, flogging, etc.

As I,said Houston, has a huge scene, dive in!

I'm more interested in the flow of things. It's just something I could learn more by watching vs reading or watching produced movies. How a sub behaves, how a dom behaves, how aggressive to be. I guess more so how people interact vs the technical things they do to each other.

What I'd imagine my problem would be is staying in the mood/character. For things that are very new to me and I have no idea how it's properly done, I tend to laugh, a lot.

It's like surfing, if you try to teach yourself usually you'll be flopping all over and doing ridiculous things. Then you watch an instructor show you the motions and then you take it more seriously.

I've yet to see a movie that gives an accurate portrayal of WIITWD.

What makes you think that laughing and having fun aren't part of being in WIITWD?

~FRing it~

I think you are overthinking this, OP. There is no set script or standard of behavior for people involved in WIITWD. You can observe 10 different dominants interacting with 10 different submissive/slaves with a result of...you guessed it...10 distinctly different experiences. Each person is different. They think uniquely. They act uniquely.

It's okay to learn, but it sounds almost like you might be looking to model yourself after the people you see. This is guaranteed to not end well because you can't be someone you aren't. You can try, but its an act...not genuinely who YOU are. Do it to learn techniques. Do it to get ideas of things that interest you. But don't do it to try to be that person you are watching.

And since when do we have to trade in things like laughter? If I had to give up my sense of humor to be a dominant, Im afraid I'd have said "fuck that shit" a long time ago.
