I chatted to Steve about this today on the way to climbing in the mountains. 'Why do you do this?' he asked. 'why involve yourself in something you know you can do nothing about'? He went on to say that the reason we lived on a boat for years and just fucked off with the wind is because we didn't have to listen to the news, the tragedies and the harshness inflicted by humans all over the world and its for those very reasons we now live in the mountains. I kind of agree with him. If we look at life too closely it is depressing but I don't believe him when he says we can't do anything. If we rescue just one dog, that is one dog we can give a happy life to. If we sign just one petition then that's one more written protest. I don't know about American greyhounds but greyhounds in the UK get a bad deal. The difference between England and Spain is, cruelty to hunting dogs is a criminal offence and because most poachers need greyhounds to hunt, they can't afford an injunction forbidding them to own a dog because of past cruelty. Instead they tend to kick them into the street where they become strays but because the UK has patrolling vans looking for stray dogs, very few will remain homeless for long. If you go to Spain at this time of year you will see many starving stray dogs. You will see dead dogs at the side of the road that have been run over, not just greyhounds and you will see children throwing stones at the stray dogs and cats. Not all Spaniards are cruel to these dogs. Many locals report mistreatment to these rescue compounds and many Spaniards are battling to change Spanish law regarding the cruelty to animals.
