MariaB -> The fate of the Spanish Galgo (6/18/2013 4:09:29 AM)

When our search of finding a puppy to join our family began I was full of excitement. I never thought for a minute that such a journey would tear my heart in two. We had decided on a medium sized mut, we weren't bothered about the dog being a pedigree and we wanted something that required a lot of exercise because we both live such active outdoor lives.

Someone told me that a lot of Galgos were being brought out of Spain because of the barbaric practice of dog hanging. It all sounded a bit far fetched but being the inquisitive person I am, I did a bit of my own research.
The following images are disturbing

The good news is, countries from all over the world, including America and the UK are getting these dogs out and finding good adoptive homes for them. The Spanish public are becoming more concerned about the tragedy of the Galgo and many are lobbying government for change or reporting incidents of cruelty to the charitable organizations.

We are presently going through the process to adopt a Galgo. Fortunately the process is stringent but fingers crossed we will be accepted.

add Spain to the list of countries I am NEVER going to.......................

What the hell is wrong with those men?

This seems to be all about tradition, about allowing them to demonstrate how macho they are. Because greyhounds are hunting dogs in Spain, they are not protected from cruelty laws.

One of the good things coming out of the many worldwide campaigns and spreading the word is, more and more hunters are abandoning their dogs or handing them in to shelters.

Good will prevail

Yep - nothing says macho more to me than abusing a domesticated animal or a creature that bonds so closely to humans that they put up with being abused. [8|]

I suggest that Spanish men who abuse greyhounds be hung with a stick wedged in their mouths till they die of starvation.

You forgot the part about spreading habanero extract on their tiny little peckers first.

Before you go getting high and mighty on the Spaniards, remember that greyhounds are abused right here in the good old U.S., too. They are routinely beaten with all manner of things, shocked with cattle prods, starved, and killed just as obscenely as the Galgo just so some sweaty palmed ass can make a few dollars. I found out about the different kinds of hell greyhounds go through when my father adopted a rescue some years ago. That dog showed the clearest signs of PTSD I have ever seen.

I chatted to Steve about this today on the way to climbing in the mountains. 'Why do you do this?' he asked. 'why involve yourself in something you know you can do nothing about'? He went on to say that the reason we lived on a boat for years and just fucked off with the wind is because we didn't have to listen to the news, the tragedies and the harshness inflicted by humans all over the world and its for those very reasons we now live in the mountains. I kind of agree with him. If we look at life too closely it is depressing but I don't believe him when he says we can't do anything. If we rescue just one dog, that is one dog we can give a happy life to. If we sign just one petition then that's one more written protest.

I don't know about American greyhounds but greyhounds in the UK get a bad deal. The difference between England and Spain is, cruelty to hunting dogs is a criminal offence and because most poachers need greyhounds to hunt, they can't afford an injunction forbidding them to own a dog because of past cruelty. Instead they tend to kick them into the street where they become strays but because the UK has patrolling vans looking for stray dogs, very few will remain homeless for long. If you go to Spain at this time of year you will see many starving stray dogs. You will see dead dogs at the side of the road that have been run over, not just greyhounds and you will see children throwing stones at the stray dogs and cats.

Not all Spaniards are cruel to these dogs. Many locals report mistreatment to these rescue compounds and many Spaniards are battling to change Spanish law regarding the cruelty to animals.

I have never heard of anyone in the US hunting with a greyhound or any of the other sight hounds. People do hunt with bloodhounds, beagles and retrievers but even that is relatively uncommon. Here greyhounds are mostly racing dogs and there are very active and effective rescue organizations that arrange adoptions for retired racers.
