arled -> medical grade steel (6/18/2013 11:31:52 AM)

I'm planning on buying a sound so am making a little research online, came upon this:

quote:

The best material for penis plugs and sounds is medical grade 316 stainless steel (this is the grade of stainless steel used in surgery) it should have a smooth, almost mirror like finish, and under the mircoscope it is visibly less porous than catering grade 304 stainless steel.

So I checked what online vendors offer and they always describe their sounds as made of:

Surgical steel

or as

medical grade stainless steel

Not stating grade 316.

So..are surgical steel and medical grade steel synonyms for grade 316 steel?

Or are there a few grades of medical/surgical steel, with 316 being one of them?

:S

"Surgical steel" and "medical grade" are meaningless marketing terms that don't apply to any particular formulation of stainless steel.

Ok..

How sure are you about it?

Being the devil's advocate I'd say they don't want to confuse consumers with numbers (like writing "medical grade 316 stainless steel") and think that "surgical steel" sounds better.

Being realistic I tend to think that if they really knew which grade the steel is, they'd write it, since the consumers of such products are not stupid..and they actually look for the seal of "316 stainless steel.."

It tends to add an air of credibility as well. "Well, if it's surgical steel, it must be high quality." Unfortunately, there's zero guarantee it is.

The consumers of such products might not be stupid, but most are ignorant. Specifically, most people have no idea at all what properties the various types of stainless steel have.

fluffypet67 -> RE: medical grade steel (6/18/2013 12:53:43 PM)

This is what I found -

" 304 contains 18% chromium and 8% nickel while 316 contains 16% chromium, 10% nickel and 2% molybdenum. The molybdenum is added to help resist corrosion to chlorides (like sea water and de-icing salts)."

Also, there are other grades. See here.

Since our bodies are salt and water, we don't want anything to rust. But the length of time a sound would be exposed to the body would probably not be long enough to rust anything.

Thank you stef.

I guess it means finding the right sound will be harder then I imagined. I'll have to find an online vendor that actually states 316 grade...

Well..it may very well be true..but as you say - there's no real scenario of it rusting.

The difference between 304 and 316 that is relevant with regards to the act of sounding is the porousness of the alloy.

The more porous - the greater the chance of the material harboring bacteria and thus the greater the chance of having urinary tract infection

Are you basing all of this on that single passage from Tickleberry's website? I think you might be overthinking all of this.

The real word truth of this is that if the surface of the material is machined and polished well, what grade of stainless it's made of really isn't going to matter a whole bunch if all you're doing is sticking it in your dick. Poorly polished ASTM F138 compliant 316LVM will have as much of a chance to trap bacteria as poorly polished 304.

MistressDarkArt -> RE: medical grade steel (6/18/2013 1:31:13 PM)

316 stainless is also the preferred form for marine applications because of rust/corrosion issues with saltwater.

Arled, careful sanitation before and after using sounds is essential no matter the metal or material. I use conductive rubber as electro sounds, which is relatively porous and cannot be autoclaved or exposed to extreme heat. I wash it after use with antibacterial soap and soak it in 10% bleach solution overnight, rewash with antibac soap to remove bleach residue, then rinse it thoroughly and give it 90% rubbing alcohol wipe before storing in a clean ziplock. Before use, I wipe it with alcohol and let it dry completely before inserting.

If it works on electro rubber, it will work on your 'medical grade' sounds. I think you're ok. Use only sterile lube (surgi-lube is sterile and comes in individual packets). Remember to pee vigorously before and after sounding. Some folks need a prophylactic antibiotic such as Bactrim or nitrofurantoin on board (just one tablet) in addition to hygiene for the event to prevent UTIs.

Have fun!

Exactly. And even with all these precautions, it's still very possible to get a UTI. If your goal is to never get a UTI, then you shouldn't be jamming things up your urethra because the odds are that you will get one at some point if you engage in this kind of activity.

Well, you are knowledgeable about metals..and thank you for sharing that info with me.. [:)]

I did base my assumptions from the information on Tickleberry..damn Tickleberry! and their kind [&:]

But really, you can't claim what I quote. as there are no statistics on those sorts of stuff..

I do however worry about it and think if I should even attemp to try it, as I'm a very cautios person and it's not like I MUST put steel up my..ya know. it's definitely not a must. [8|]

stef -> RE: medical grade steel (6/18/2013 2:06:54 PM)

There's nothing wrong with being cautious, just don't get unnecessarily mired in the minutiae [;)]

arled -> RE: medical grade steel (6/18/2013 2:15:42 PM)

English is my native..but if I understood you said don't get caught up in the details..

That's the road to a UTI though, no? [&:] not minding the details?

stef -> RE: medical grade steel (6/18/2013 2:22:54 PM)

You can follow rules of cleanliness without obsessing over them. And even with all that, you still might get a UTI. If you do, it's not the end of the world. It's just one of the associated risks with this type of play.

It reminds me of the movie Gattaca..

quote:

For the genetically superior, success is easier to attain but is by no mean guaranteed.

Just change it a little

For the genetically cautious, UTIS are harder to attain but is by no mean un-guaranteed.

Great movie by the way [:)]

You fuckin with the G there. I found it out when my typing exceeded my reality, for something I knew much better than, but was a bit tipsy when I posted.

I think I should tell you that a woman who knows her alloys is incredibly hot. The molybdenum content of steel grades is pillow talk in our family.

Athena, I'm glad I was not the only one to realize this.
